Just curious, on what data do you base your assertion that this is "drastically overblown?"

Whats "drastically overblown" isn't the infections or anything - it's this mass hysteria panic where people are thinking things as stupid as stocking up on TP are viable and competent actions that a human can perform during these times. That couldn't be further from the truth.

Don't go to massively populated areas
Try to remain distant from people if you MUST go in public
Wash your hands thoroughly If you MUST go in public
Try to learn to do things like not rubbing your eyes, sticking fingers in your mouth, etc.

Instead we have bumbling morons lining up at crowded grocery stores - overbuying products for no reason... and...essentially... doing the EXACT opposite of what CDC is telling us to do.

Oh fair enough. I largely agree with you there.

The TP run is bizarre to me, the food is not, no one really has a handle on how bad this will get and people fear grocery stores might be ordered closed and they will not have enough food. Also they see others stocking up and feel compelled to do the same and as the virus spreads it will get more and more risky to go out in public. I think this is capable of spreading without touching someone else's nasal discharge from sneezing, it spreads too quickly for that.

The fact that you can spread it before you even feel sick (no coughing or sneezing etc) shows how easy this can spread. I think just the air coming out of your nose/mouth is enough.
And so do I, this is spreading far too quickly for any other way but a sick person breathing around people even before they show symptoms.

Jesus, Italy just reported 300 dead in just the last 24 hours.

368, no?

I'm getting really angry about our own government's approach.

I do not understand what they think they are doing. Not testing is insane. If you can tell an ill person they definitely have COVID19 they will be far, far more likely to take seriously the idea of quarantining themselves and staying away from granddad till they are over it. If you leave them thinking they've probably just got a cold, they are going to be way more likely to start mixing in the community and infect others. Then there's the impossibility of seeing where the 'hotspots' of infection are if you aren't rigorously testing.

We should be doing what South Korea is doing, not just waiting to get into the same state as Italy.

The article suggests we will be Italy in two weeks - I believe it will take a bit longer than that, because the UK infections are more geographically-spread out - Italy has them all concentrated in one region, which puts still more strain on their health system and makes it worse. But my guess is that if this government carries on as it is, we'll be where Italy is now in maybe a month.

FYI in the last 48h there have been numerous positive news about medicines that can stop the virus. Multiple companies worldwide are already starting testing a working vaccine.

Yes there are several groups working on possible vaccines - that's good news, especially as very early on I read some suggestions that a vaccine might not be possible. But they'll take a couple of years to develop and test. Not sure what you mean by 'medicines that can stop the virus' - are you saying there are suggestions of anti-virals being developed?

Yup, agree 110%, the Trump administration early on was more interested in protecting the health of the stock market vs the people, testing kits should have been given high priority but we got shit like "the latest Dem hoax". Bottom line is we have no real idea how many have been infected due to the current piss-poor state of testing capability. We could be like Italy in the next 3 weeks with a horrific infection rate that was unknown to us now.

my understanding is limited, i got that a medicine has been proven to be able to neutralise the virus while in the active stage - it ties to the spike on the corona preventing the virus from attaching to the receptors on the cells. This is news from italian TV 24h ago. They also said that while this is expected to be effective it is believed that it would only work for some people and do nothing for others. Not sure why, possibly more than one receptor exists depending on your genetic makeup. Biology is one thing where I'm really short. Ill put up more info once i google it.

Looks like they may actually have a working vaccine already, of course it will take long to test etc.

Incredible how fast they can do that though. This is more advanced than even rocket engineering I'd say, to be able to figure all this stuff out as it's working at such a totally different level than the things we can see.

watch this drug cause the zombie apocalypse

I'm confident that would be noticed in the phase I trials. Though it may be that if it turns test subjects into ravenous zombies who eat the clinical trial team it won't be published in a peer reviewed journal. Damn publication bias.

wonder how many stupid comments the same as this one have been said before

"zombies" prob just 20-30 times before you saying it now. as far as vaccine, really it takes a year of testing more likely it will cause retardation or paralysis.

It's an interesting read, traditionally any vaccine involves growing large amounts of the virus to be used in the vaccine itself, this is very time consuming, this approach involved mimicking the proteins of it's DNA and making a product based on that. I hope it goes well in trials.

Just heard that Italy has a large Chinese immigrant population and they went home for the new year. Supposedly a large part of why Italy is getting spanked.
My SCUBA guide yesterday told me she has a sister who lives Italy and they are going about their lives like normal and just taking the obvious precautions. She's obviously not in the hot spot in northern Italy but they aren't even overreacting like people in the states are.

That is not the whole thing "being drastically" overblown at all. That is public being stupid and not acting appropriately. You do see the chasm there, I hope.

The stories I've seen on the news have to-me disappointing ETAs for possible vaccines. I hope those move up closer, obviously the situation is 10/10 on the urgency scale.
