Hey ATOT Golfers,

What kind of grip do you use for putting?

I've seen 3 different grips:

1) traditional interlocked - same as irons/woods
2) baseball bat grips - fingers not interlocked
3) opposite grip - L hand below R (for righties)

Who uses what? What advantages/disadvantages does each grip possess?

I use the traditional interlocked, but I seem to be pulling the ball L slightly -- i think i'm using too much wrist. Will changing my grip help?

I use the same grip I use for playing cricket.. so I guess baseball bat would be my choice.

Edit: tried the other two grips @ home w/ wine glasses as the 'target'; broke a glass, and managed to p!ss the gf off.

More or less base ball grip, though my right index finger points towards head of the putter.

Oh, what's the difference?

for a right handed person:

interlock is when ur pointing finger on the left hand is locked with ur pinkie on the right hand

overlap is when ur right pinkie is on top of ur left pointing finger

For righties:

Baseball grip: all 10 fingers are on the club
Vardon overlap: pinkie on right hand overlaps index finger of left
Interlocking: pinkie on right hand in between the index and middle fingers on left hand, left index finger is between right pinkie and ring finger

For putting, a huge number of good players use the "reverse overlap". The left index finger overlaps the right pinkie. That's what I use.

yep. Have to agree. I'd say 90% of single handicappers use the reverse overlap. And for the guy who points his right index finger at the clubhead, that is the easiest way to tell if a guy is a sh!tty putter. I love to see a guy putt like that, because it means he has zero idea of where the putterhead is, doesn't know how to release the head, and he is a BAD putter. Time to up the wager on him.

I usually putt one handed to give my opponents a handicap

Baseball grip when I'm playing seriously. (dollar a stroke, dollar a hole, carries, 3 rounds. )

I actually use the opposite or 'left hand low' grip when putting. It's supposed to help with control or something. I don't really know. My dad taught me it when I was learning to golf and I've always used it. I even use it on putt putt courses. I am unable to putt any other style, it just feels wrong. And it's always good for at least 1 comment a round from the people I'm playing with.

ROFL, yep. Right index finger down the shaft is a guaranteed sign of a bad putter. It's like a player carrying one of those 2-way chippers, it means he's got no skills and needs a crutch.

Same here, except I'm a lefty so it's my left index finger.

I use the baseball grip, it's just so much easier to control. Even around the green, with short chips I use the baseball grip. The only reason you don't use the baseball grip with longer irons and drivers is that it's really tough to generate any sort of clubhead speed, otherwise it's a superior way of controlling the ball with half swing type shots.
I just shot a 79 this weekend, so it MUST be working for me.
