Looking for something to fire cheap ammo at the range.

For reference, as far as .22's, I've only shot a Walther P22 and a Bersa; both felt good in my hands.

Any .22 from a reputable mfg like Ruger, Beretta, Browning, S & W, etc. will be just fine. You need to find a gun store with a range that will allow you to try a few different ones.

I have an older Beretta 70S that I just love. Also owned a Ruger Mark2 target that was a great gun. Neither are made any more, though. Ruger does make a Mark3.

Don't forget to consider the revolvers when you are looking.

Price range?

Before I know that, I always recommend to avoid ruger. Ruger and browning are the classic choices, but I don't like rugers so I'd say go browning buckmark.

Otherwise, aside from my old sig trailside (hammerli), I really like the advantage arms 22 target slide on top of my rock island 1911 frame.

are we talking plinking or competition?

I've never heard anything bad about a Mark II. That being said, the .22LR/.22magnum Ruger Revolver my Dad bought 25 years ago is still my favorite gun to shoot.

Trying to keep it around $500 or less.

What reasons regarding Ruger? I'm not saying you are wrong just let's throw some specifics out there.

Also, love the .22 barrel on a 1911 or glock frame idea, but you are right in asking price range because that get's real expensive.

beretta 21 bobcat...i think it looks better then the browning buckmark/ruger MKII. IP22 isnt bad but I think they had a rebate not too long ago.

If you're looking for a rifle....marlin is having a sale and you can get a 795 for $99 after rebate.

Cheap ammo wouldn't fire in the Walther. White box federal/ remington didn't have enough power to push the slide back. CCI was fine.

I've got a Ruger mark 2 if bought in a local trade magazine for $200. I like it.

I just hate they way the parts inside come apart and then the problems coming back together again. I just don't think the aggravation is worth it when you have a very good alternate choice in the brownings.

Aside from that, almost all guns have some kind of peculiarities regarding ammo, some just less than others. Even within same manufacturer and model, one will like something another won't. But I have had good experiences with brownings eating whatever is put in them. Rugers as well, but see the above explanation of why I dont' like rugers.

The ruger is a bitch if you completely break it down. That is one that I will never do again. But I've only got $200 in it and has been firing fine for ~3 years.

Browning Buckmark is tough to beat, IMO. I love mine - is a blast to shoot and very accurate.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if there is there anything available today like the old S&W Model 63?

Never mind, found it on Wiki.

The Model 317 kit gun replaced the 63 and other kit guns.

Smith and Wesson 41 if you've got the money.

If not, Ruger Mk2. Or a Ruger Mk3 with the magazine safety (AKA "magazine dangerousy") removed.

P22's are horridly inaccurate and some just can't ever shoot. I bought one and it shoots a foot low at 25 feet. This is incurable. It's worthless forever.

That's a lot of $$ for a .22 but if it's going to be a keeper and not a toss around, I'd do it.

You can find them cheaper than MSRP pretty much everywhere that stocks them. And as far as keeping them, I have had mine since 1991 and I bought it used. It will definitely last as long as you want to keep it.

Are there any S&W revolvers that you would recommend, similar in accuracy to the Model 41?

If you can't afford real bullets then just get a bb gun at walmart. Shooting with a 22 pistol is all but pointless. It's too weak for reliable self defense. You cannot hunt with a 22 pistol for the same reason...and being a good shot with a 22 means nothing if you're not used to the recoil of a MAN'S weapon like a 45 or 10mm...so it's not like you can practice with a 22 to improve your skills with a non-pussified weapon.

Ahh yeah, still waiting for the day these holy-warmongers annihilate themselves so we can turn that desert into a resort nation...and that's all the more reason to not use a 22. Head shots are kinda tough to pull off when you're being shot at and have to duck and cover.
