Im wanting to move away from the bleach/iodine system. Looking at doing both a kayltadyn hiker filter pump to filter water for clarity/taste/nasiness and a steripen to knock out the viruses once cleared

I realize boiling water is the cheapest option but its not always feasible when on time constraints or if its rainig

What does atot do for getting water from the source?

I have a katadyn base camp. I hate pumping filters, so this one is perfect. Fill bag and hang it up and let gravity do the work. This works good for when my camp is near the water source.

For times when I need faster water I have a MSR Sweetwater. Was a pretty good flow rate per pump when I bought it 10 years ago. I'm betting it slow compared to newer models.

does the katadyn bag remove e coli? If it removes everything that would be ideal.

From katadyns website i was under the assumption none of their filters adequetly remove viruses

Edit: maybe im being way too cautious?

No, it doesnt offer a viral block. The steripen would be a good addition to my filtering arsenal perhaps. I've never been to worried about viral contamination though.

The Swiss Katadyn company is the world’s Number One for individual water purification systems and products, with a global market share exceeding 50 percent. Katadyn has been developing water filters, chlorine and silver-based sterilizing agents, and mobile desalinators for the trekking and marine markets for over 80 years now.

Good point, I wonder how frequent viruses are in moving water. Id probably get one especially in the areas ive been in that double as high altitude pasture grazimg for cattle. Every now and then u find a dead animal upstream

I use a MSR Miniworks:

I like it... the pump lever is well designed, and a large mouth water bottle (nalgene type) attaches directly to the base of the pump. About 5 minutes and you've got 32 oz of fresh potable water.

i used the very same on a week long hiking trip. one of the gaskets sprung a leak towards the end, but we were fortunate to not catch anything. extra gaskets/seals are kind of important to carry around.

One guy you didn't see taking a dump upstream will make your day.

No idea on hiking water. I can recommend you a system to treat an entire city's water supply though.

You puss....use a dead sheep's bladder to filter it out. Has Bear Grylls taught you NOTHING?
