As far as the debate about whether to call newer cars 'muscle cars' goes...I think it is a fare categorization for the likes of Mustangs, GTO's, Camaros, Vipers..etc. The Charger is pushing it (only because of the 4 doors) and the Vette is a bit too 'sporty'. The Viper is in only because it is so raw and unrefined (not sure about the newer ones but the older one's were downright raw).

Muscle cars were generally the 'cheaper' models that were easier for the younger crowd to buy, easy to upgrade to insane levels of performance (for the time), offered appearance upgrades, or were stripped down special order racers (Yenko, Baldwin, COPO...etc).

I can't remember why the Camaro and Mustang (among others) were called "Pony Cars"

Anyway.......

My '70 Chevelle at Chevellabration 2005 in Goodlettsville TN
My Freshly Restored 350
Engine Bay Shot

I'm in the midst of switching the rear brakes to Disc with SS lines and installing Lakewood 'lift bars' to help with the 'wheel hop' inherent to Chevelles.

A 'money pit' she is....but it is definitely worth it

SDC

God damn! Now THAT is a muscle car!

IIRC, they were called Pony cars because they were originally on a smaller platform than their full size "Muscle" counterparts and they started with small block motors as opposed to the big block muscle variants. (This is how it was explained to me anyway)

Does my '94 Civic DX count? I have a "beefy" sounding exhaust tip on it. It gives my car the "V8" sound.

So, I canceled the plans on the 500hp 383 for $5k. The engine builder called me up and offered me an iron/iron 350 4-bolt main bored .060 over (360ci) damn near complete for $1200. Even has a water pump and high volume fuel pump.

Today it is sitting in my garage

All I have to add is an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, Holley 600cfm carb (buying off a co-worker) and an MSD ignition system. Any other parts can be taken off of the old engine. The best part is that there are millions of mods out there for the 350 and damn near all of them will work with this engine. Now, to find somewhere to install it. I think I'm gonna call the Vette Doctors, but two guys at work said they could do it for $500 less than estimates. I trust them because they are Porsche technicians and are meticulous about what they do. One of them has built a few hot rods so he knows GM engines too. Another option is a friend's father. I'm going to ask her tonight if she thinks he'll do it. He has a 56-58 (can't remember the year) BelAir drag car, so he knows what he's doing.

Almost forgot the specs. The car it was installed and tested in was dynoed at 300rwhp and 29Xrwtq. Should be good for about the same in my car. In the 1/4, I expect it to be around 13.5-13.7 or so with the 300rwhp, 3134lb weight, shift kit and 3k stall torque converter.

I test drove a 2005 GTO. Wasn't overly impressed with it. It's a big heavy brut of a car...not really my forte.

"67 SS ElCamino 327 .040" bored roller motor, Buick GN overdrive trans, 4.11 posi 12 bolt. Picks up L front wheel on launch, revs to 8500 and clicks off 12.48 ET's at 126 in street trim. Its half-tubbed, 6pt cage, 4link rear suspension.Thorley tri-y headers, x-pipe w cutouts.

"69 SS 396 Chevelle, added 700R4 vette trans w 2800 stall lockup 'verter, 3.36 12 bolt posi. Black, bold and bad car, using 4-3 series flowmasters and 3" pipes to muffle it. Smokes the 315-50 BFG street slicks past the 1/8th mile, best et of 11.88 at better than 130. Has AC and all power (inc windows/locks), tilt, was a rare car for its mix of factory options (bench seat column shift tilt). Running crane .592 lift 306 degree duration lumpity-lump cam, welded/ported heads, edelbrock RPM airgap manifold, 850 double pumper carb w 4 corner idle mod. Also running edelbrock rear suspension w southside machine ladder bars.

I love those hi-revvin 327 motors almost as much as Chevy bigblocks. Did all my own work on them too, the Elky is a project and will be finished this summer, the 69 I've driven since 1992, was 2nd orig owner w only 68000 miles. I bought it because I had a copo 427 68 chevelle back in the day in highschool...one of benefits of being raised in the birthplace of generous motors...thankyou Colonel Sam McGlaughlin...

Would love to pick up another first generatrion Abody convertible to round out the "collection".

Ever notice that hotrodders also tend to be inveterate overclockers?
