Is it true that I can just put shortcuts to my mp3's in the MP3 folder, rather than moving the whole songs over?

Rockstar blew it. Check out http://www.gta3forums.com/ib/ikonboard.cgi and look at their GTA3PC section. For every general comment for the game, theres 2 bitching bout the gazillion bugs. I'm amazed this thread hasn't become a bitch & moan thread yet 'cause I'm already regretting spending the $50 on this games

.... reminds me of all the issues Eidos caused porting Final Fantasy 7&8 to PC

Edit: Back to Best Buy it goes...

After reading a bazillion posts in about 4 or 5 forums, it seems to be a widespread problem all arround. I think I figure out some quick points/tweaks that help things. Unfortunately, i can't test any of this until i make it home from work. Yeah, I am looking this up while at work...its been a slow day.

  • To alter resolutions, you have to before starting up the game or loading a saved game.
  • To get rid of the "blurry" effects, turn off the trails option. Leave the frame limiting and sync on. This may smooth out things too.
  • Try using different sound options. Try selecting DirectSound also before starting a game.
  • If you are having severe issues with slowness (less than 10fps or such) Turn off your agp capabilies of your vid card. You can do this by setting the AGP apature in your BIOS to less than 32 (set it to something like 4), or turn it off with your vidcard software. This will set it into PCI mode, but it seemed to have dramatic effects on some systems. Something to do with the texture handling that the game does. This seemed to work very well with older ATI cards.
  • Of course, make sure your using at least 28.32 Dets for your Nvidia cards. And, in related info, your card MUST at least support Direct X 8.1. So for alot of you Voodoo card owners, you might be SOL unless you can find a set of drivers from VoodooFiles.
  • Again, things might ease up a bit if you use the No CD patch and copy your play disk locally. There was some rumblings that the copy protection (SafeDisk) causes CD swapping issues and slows the game.
  • The directX microsuck patch at least fixes the startup issues

This is all I can think of at the moment...if i think of more, I will post.

Great, I'm sure you and the other two people it works for are extremely happy! Uninstalled. Back to store. Installed SOF2: Double Helix. Call me when a patch is out for that POS.

I think you are suffering from a double whammy in that many people seem to have problems with ATI video cards and AMD processors with this game. My nVidia/Intel combo runs perfectly.

In all fairness, I imagine the people having problems are simply more vocal than those who are not. It runs flawlessly for me as well.

I had problems, with lag (even in 640x480)

Now running 1600x1200x32 with everything maxed and 0 problems.

Turn the frame limiter on. That's what did it for me, was smooth sailing from there on. I'm using EAX3 with no problems, but some folks seem to so try disabling that.

Frame limiter? Is that something in the game or in my hardware setup? I'd really like to get it running smooth at 1028 at least, but that isn't happening now.

It's in the display settings in the game. I suggest you also disable trails, which are a performance killer and in my opinion look bad.

Well, the No CD patch doesn't work.....it still asks for the CD...shrug, ah well.

And I tried doing the MP3s thing...I did a link to a folder, but it doesnt show up...i guess you need to link each individual song?

Yes, put a shortcut for each song, not a folder.

I did have some probles with it starting out but after I tweaked my system a bit, everything worked pretty good. Now, if only I was good at the game...

Would be handy for walking and driving, as there seems to be only one speed, full blast.

How about one with analog buttons? That would fix the full blast problem.

Isn't there a way to hook up a ps2 controller to the PC?

Any recommendations for a good but affordable gamepad?

"Any recommendations for a good but affordable gamepad? "

I researched alot of gamepads for pc's and there is not one single gamepad that does it all.

One thing is for sure the Sony Dualshock 2 controller is probably one of the best controllers ever made,
but its for PS2. So I looked around for an adapter and found it here
adapter

This one doesn't have vibration but I never use that so I got it. It's about 10$ shipped,
I bought a Dualshock2 from ebay for about 20 bux, and I got a Dualshock 2, and the adapter
for $30 which is what most pc controllers cost (the decent ones at least) and I am happy.
The adapter works great and it rocks in gta3

I'm using the Gravis Gamepad Pro USB. Was less than 20 bucks and it can be easily picked up at any gaming store for that price(EB, Babages, Best Buy, ect). The only thing different between it and a PS2 controller is the dual shock buttons/vibrators. It looks exactly like a old PS1 controler...except black of course . Use it for all my console type games. Works perfectly.

I only use the mouse/keyboard combo during sniping missions.

On a side note, my performance has gone back down in the sh*t'er. I probably am only getting 10fps at the most. And I am using 640x480x16. Any higher and it is unplayable. I really hope they come out with a XP performance patch soon. :disgust:

Ok, think i fixed most of my problems and this might help some of you Geforce owners out there too.

I set my AGP apature size all the wayup to 256...you can use 64 or 128 if you like, but it definately helps with the texture management. I set mine to 256 because I am running 512 and I figure I have the room.

I also got the geforce tweak utility from Guru3d and turned off my "force apps to run FSAA(full screen anti aliasing)". This had a dramatic improvement in speed and the quality didn't really change that much for me. At least now I can play it with pretty much 0 slowdowns. Have only tried 640x480 at 16 and 32bit, but may try higher settings here real soon. Hope this helps you guys.

I think you still need an adapter for that. Dunno how the OS will handle the pad. Anyone know if there is drivers too?

I have the adapter on order. I guess my question is,

Does Dualshock2=Dualshock in black

Is it the same thing? I mean are they interchangable on systems? I know the Dualshock2 works on a PS1, but does it work the other way around?
