That is cool. My file server has a single Samsung 840 128GB for the boot drive and then the following:

4TB x 4
2TB x 2
1.5TB x 2

I wish I had a decent CPU. Mine is a A4-3300. It was the lowest clocked dual-core APU that AMD made when I rebuilt my file server in 2013. It's good enough to serve up files to my household, but cannot transcode (no PLEX). I planned to upgrade the file server this year. That project is on hold due to financial difficulties. It's not a priority. It's a want.

What are you using 72GB of ram for?

Every time I build a server I always look into Dell but it ends up way too expensive, the base server is not that expensive, it's the ram. So I end up going Supermicro, then I can just buy any ecc ram I want. Though I heard in some model Dells you don't have to use Dell ram. But it's kinda a gamble.

I only have 32GB in my VM server, but that's the max the motherboard will take. I still want to figure out an open source VM environment. Using ESXi now but the client does not work in Linux so need a VM just so I can manage my VMs lol. I had tried KVM/Qemu but they are FAR from turn key. Proxmox is based on them and is more turn key but it had some quircks. Need to revisit it again. I eventually want to setup 2 VM hosts and have fail over and a SAN. But for a proper SAN environment you need a cluster aware file system and that's where everything falls apart. I don't think there are any Linux ones. Can use NFS though, but then that's not really a SAN, it's a NAS. That's how I'm setup now, it's with NFS.

I was thinking about going dual-core Xeon myself. I bought a bad ass case and then financial reality hit me. Plus, I was able to repair my file server and reload Windows. I had some thread back in August asking what to use all those resources for. You did not post in it. Would you mind listing your VMs and uses for your server?

I don't see the point of using ssd for boot. I don't care how long it takes for the server to boot since it is on 24/7. VMs on the other hand benefit greatly.
