Lots more places to loot in the city. You can only hope that supplies don't get cut to your cabin. How much fuel do you think that you could store and how long would it last? Do you think you could protect it from others that will come to take it? How sustainable do you think you could be? Look how often you have to repair your solar setup to your shed. My sister had solar off the grid up in the Upper Peninsula. It was hard. Now, imagine the same, but you could not order any supplies to do maintenance. Maybe it would be better if we just had competent leadership in our government we could have faired this crisis better.
With more land I would have more options. Here I have a tiny property so I was forced to put the solar panels on the roof making them hard to reach and at a bad angle. I would have a much larger solar array, and put the array on the ground where it's more easily accessible, and put the panels vertical. Could have wind turbines too. Everything would be electric or fire powered so I don't need to rely on fossil fuel and also be more green. Though I would maybe have a backup propane generator just in case but goal would be that it's never needed. You can let propane sit for a long time. Basically I would want to try to be self sufficient for like a year if food supplies are in trouble. It would not be pleasant as food options would be a little limited but I would at least want to make it doable if shit hits the fan. I recall reading up on the scientific accuracy of The Martian and it turns out you can actually survive on potatoes alone. You will not be healthy but you can survive. So I could grow potatoes, among other things. Probably have chickens for eggs. That is an area I would need to do way more research. Not like I can just order a pizza lol.
Since electricity storage is expensive I would also want to look into thermal energy storage. Oversize the solar system so I can run baseboard heaters all day, some buildings such as the water tower would be brought to the highest temp practically possible (ex: just below max rating of storage tank) as long as there's excess power. The water itself would act as a thermal mass too. In the cabin could have water thermal masses as well. Really I could probably just use small tankless water heaters and just run them in a loop. They would only run based on availability of power. I have this idea of using induction to bring a bucket of sand to several hundred degrees by heating a metal rod in the middle, but no idea how well it would work. These are all things I'll be able to experiment with when I build my shop here and have a proper work area for projects.
Lot of things I would need to do on an experimental basis. It would take years to get the property to the point that it's self sufficient. My biggest fear is thieves though, but hopefully they are less likely to go that far. Most don't have vehicles. Security is an aspect I would want to work on as best as I can though. Especially because I would not be there all the time while it's in the process of being built. It would just be a place to go camping.
