Then there's the upgrade my home network to 10G just to do it. Hopefully, my next mobos will have Intel 10G build in.

I tend to try to go with the QVL if I can too. I've had too many weird issues with builds, at least by making sure it's in the list it removes a variable. Ironicly my current system is the most stable I've ever had and it was not even originally meant for me to use as a workstation, it was a mining rig. It only has 8GB of ram though and I often find it being a limiting factor so I ordered more ram... forgot to check the QVL this time though. It may be hard to find though as there was not many choices to pick from to begin with. We are quite limited here in Canada now that NCIX and Tigerdirect are gone. If things get any worse I may try to get my vendor's permit and just order direct from suppliers. They are kind of hard to shop at though, they don't tend to show much details on what you're buying. Would be a good incentive to start my own computer store though... even if I just do drop shipping, it's something at least. I'm surprised no one has filled the gap of NCIX and Tigerdirect yet. Do people just not build computers much anymore?

I could also do the KISS approach and just build a single Threadripper system and have my existing VM server part of the cluster once I migrate everything over. I don't know if it's wise to mix AMD and Intel in a VM cluster though. The systems ideally need to be of similar vintage to work right or you get weird issues when trying to live migrate VMs.

eh? that makes zero sense. Whole point to vm is virtualisation.

Like I said it would not be ideal but it would be cheaper than building 2+ hosts. Technically I think it's best to have 3 even so you don't run into split brain. Then still need to find a cluster aware file system. Gets complicated, but it is the most ideal setup. Right now I only have the single VM server but it's running ESXi so it's quite limited, I eventually want to switch to something more open like Proxmox.

Stupid daughter wants to cut a hole in a box so that she can see the egg and see if it is broken..

Seal the box up tight so no one will ever know if the egg survives. Schrodinger's egg FTW!

Man, I still keep thinking about new computer parts. I've had this addiction for far too long. There's got to be a support group out there. One for our spouses and SOs.

Group leader: Boxes, say hello to the group.
Boxes: Hello group!
Group leader: Boxes, tell us why you are here today.
Boxes: Uh... I just purchased a new video card for my PC.
Group leader: Did you NEED a new video card?
Boxes: Yes. I needed the most expensive one I could find. Evidently. Fuck. I guess I do have issues. Pardon me. I need new cable sleeving.
Group: WE LOVE YOU, BOXES!
Narrator: Won't you please help today?!! For less than $20 a month, you can help some computer nerd get control of his life. If not you, then who? SEND MONEY TO THE ADDRESS SHOWN BELOW

Err no, the dual 7742 is horribly expensive. By the time you need power of two 64 cores, you can get off lease ones.

The 7702, not 7742. I was agreeing with you on the 7702. Just want the one you can pair up in the future when they're cheap.

7702P is single, it can never be paired xd. That is why it is cheaper. In fact two 7702P box is probably bfaster than one dual 7742.

I guess 24 core is fine too. Just remember you lose pcie lanes when you have dual cpu.

I don't need to do any of this. It's all just a want. I'll put it off until I have a meltdown and then spend way too much money.

Boxes: I feel the need for speed!
