Next year I'll probably book most of my vacation in August-October stretch. We get our winter much later now days and it's cooler but not freezing at that time, so it's better conditions to be working outside. It's a gamble though, because I've seen years where it just rains non stop for that whole stretch. So I might want to book at least one week in like end of May so I can at least get started.

But the winter we just had, I could have been going there all the way until end of January, in fact, probably most of the year. We hardly got any snow it was pretty wild.

@Red Squirrel - This is sounding like a whole lot more trouble than I'd want to deal with and I'm not really seeing what the long term benefits are aside from being "off the grid."

It seems to me that a well insulated double-wide would serve the same purpose and is probably cheaper if you really take a hard look at all of the costs involved.

Will all be worth it in the end though. If I do plan to live there and find a job where I can WFH 100%, my cost of living out there will be super low too. The property taxes in town, and all the utility bills etc are a real killer and go up each year so at some point I won't be able to afford to live in town anyway and definitely not be able to retire.

Not sure at what point I'll decide to actually move off grid since I still have lot of work and effort put into the house that would be hard to let go of, but I at least want the off grid property setup so I can move there any time. Also would serve as a backup if I was to get laid off or something. I would immediately sell the house and go move there. Either way I don't want to work for rest of my life so at some point I'll probably just retire early and move there. If I stay in town I have to work pretty much until I die just to cover the bills.

Will be nice to have more space (and time if I retire early) off grid too to get into hobbies, always wanted to get into fabrication and build stuff and have a nice big shop.

Off for the weekend, then Monday is the big day, they start to clear an area on my land. Going to head there very early in the day as I got stuff I need to move out of the way that I stashed in the bush and I just want to be around to oversee things. Going to be a big relief once that's done, as trying to do it by hand in the heat and with the bugs and limited time was pretty futile. And that's not even handling the stumps. With their excavator they can do the stumps and all so it will be nice and flat and can drive over it.

Will be nice to have an open area that's away from the road so I can start to build structures. I don't think I'll do much this year as I should work on starting to pay some of this cost off but probably do the outhouse and a tarp shed. Maybe start on the foundation for the cabin as I have 2 weeks off at the end of the summer when it won't be as hot and bugs won't be as bad.
Just read that you have a heat dome forming over you guys over the weekend. Supposed to break a lot of records.

Yeah suppose to go into the 30's, going to be pretty nuts. I don't think I'll be doing much at the property but hanging out in a shaded area and going to check on the crew once in a while. Too hot to do much. Hopefully they have AC in the excavator.

3 degrees right now. Seems these temp swings are just the norm now. We rarely get stable weather anymore.

Did the different this week. I give you... 5-cheese pizza! (My own) garlic white sauce, fresh shredded provolone, fresh shredded smoked cheddar (smoked with wood and apple), fresh goat cheese mozzarella, fresh grated parmesan and asiago, sauteed arbol peppers, olive oil, lemon zest and fresh basil. Yummy!

Garlic white sauce: In a sauce pan, whisk 1 tbs of butter and 1 tbs of flour over medium heat. Next add 1/2 cup of cold milk. When it starts to simmer, add 1-3 cloves of fresh garlic, 1/8 tsp salt, 1/4 cup fresh grated Parmesan, and a pinch of both pepper and nutmeg.

Those trees are packed together like match sticks. I can see why wild fires are such a problem. There's probably some depth compression from the photo, but even so.

Oh yeah the forest is dense. A wild fire coming through is definitely going to be one of my biggest threats. I'll eventually want to setup some sort of fire protection system like a big water reserve and sprinklers that can just soak everything. Even if I don't have trees too close to structures, embers are a big problem. And the heat itself. Hopefully a wild fire never makes it in this area.

Read up on defensible space and firewise construction. There is a lot you can do to protect yourself from wildfire. Since you haven’t built yet, you can design your structures to be more survivable.
