Good god... I hope he suspends it for life you idiot. You clearly do not care about the safety of children in your vehicle. You deserve everything you get.

That judge will show no mercy... and you deserve none.

lol, 25 years ago I used to help my dad drive, boy how things have changed.

I had to laugh when I saw that drivel from him. When I was a kid my parents drove us around in a station wagon with all 5 of us bouncing around in the back. I never recognized my parents for the cruel menaces to society that they obviously were in his padded room of a world.

Make the passengers pay up their share they are equally responsible.

$470 for seat belt violation is insane.

Serious question without reading the whole thread- in a back seat big enough for four kids, can the two smallest not share one seat belt? If you don't put the shoulder strap somewhere stupid, I'd think it would be better than nothing...

Talk to the judge. I am sure he/she will lighten the fees and fines.

The cop was indeed being a dick. But, did you do anything to draw said cop's attention?

Also, how did you cover up the bruises the kids received from when they hit their heads on the windows as you were doing donuts in the parking lot??

If only California enforced immigration laws with the same vigor as traffic laws.

OP must be new here. Srsly fucked up what you did and you deserve every single cent and I hope you never drive again. You sir are a terror to the roads and a menace to the streets, a danger to children and you should go to jail so you never have an opportunity to hurt another child. The govt is giving you a break by only charging nearly $2k. They should have arrested you.

On a side note, I'm willing to bet that if you go in front of the judge - and plead no contest and beg the mercy of the court you'll get most of it dropped.

Something stinks here. So 4 kids (well middle school age, not exactly toddlers) are in the back, so NONE of them buckled up? You couldn't tell 3 of em to put that shit on and let the fourth sit on a lap or lay across?

Sharing seatbelts isn't safe - it's probably as bad as riding without seatbelts. No way one seatbelt can hold in two people.

So a seatbelt can hold a 400lb fatty, but will self destruct when you put two skinny 90lb 12 year olds in it?

oh, and lol@ the usual self righteous ATOT justice. Those fines are absolutely ridiculous.

They don't care about protecting people from other people. In california they only care about protecting people from themselves.

you guys yelling at him are dickheads;
he may be in the wrong, but that's a ridiculous fine.
does he deserve to pay almost $2000 in fines, lose his license and with that probably his ability to provide for his kids because he put ONE MORE PERSON in the car than it was designed to handle? gtfo of here if you think so

I'm pretty sure he was suppose to know of the consequences... He could have avoided MOST of it by having 3 out of 4 back seat kids buckled in

More importantly, who the fuck looks for advice from a forum that is known for being generally shitty to everything and everyone?

I've actually thought a lot about the "unsafe" stuff I used to do when I was a kid, and what I'll allow my kids to do if I ever have any. We used to go play in construction areas, have stick fights, ride bikes without helmets, ride around in the back of trucks, leave food out for a day or sometimes two before eating it, cook long expired meat, etc. Where will I draw the lines?

Some of those questions are still open, but I feel pretty certain that I won't carry around FOUR unbelted children. We'd have to be fleeing Godzilla.

You think an insurance company will care about child seatbelt violations?

<-- auto insurance underwriter

I don't underwrite for CA, so I am unsure of exactly how their laws are. Most states in the US though would not count seatbelt violations, and I would guess CA would not either (they are very pro-consumer and have insurance companies locked down with what they can and cannot do).

even when there are points associated with the violation?

I have rear seat belts that can be pulled to the limit in order to cover two small children.
They kids may not like it, but it can be done.
Most rear belts are designed to be able to cover a 250lb adult.

It is the fact that you were lazy and did not want to go through the effort of ensuring the kids were buckled in.

You neglected in the OP to indicate the ages of the kids and why the LEO actually stopped you.

If the stop was only for the kids, I would suspect that at least one was obviously standing up where the LEO could see it rather than sitting down and behaving.

There are additional details omitted by the OP.

The kids were between the ages of 12 and 15.

To be clear, these were not my kids. These kids were my younger cousins.

OP fails. Everyone knows you're supposed to have the smallest kid sit on the biggest kid's lap and buckle them up together.
