I have no sympathy for someone dumb enough to bid on this, however, I think you are all screwed in the head if you think the seller is doing nothing wrong. He is clearly a POS scammer.

Do you refer to laptops as boxes?

The buyer must be out of money now. He hasn't responded to my offers to sell him my boxes. I have some nice boxes too. His loss.

Remember guys, that a computer is sometimes called a box. What if some poor not-so-computer savy grandma wins one of these. Really, the obvious intent of the seller is to scam. I don't see how some of you can condone something like this. I really wish I can add feedback even when I'm not in the auction.

If the auction says its a box, and shows a picture of a box and not the actual computer, and the first 2 bids are $1 and $2, id likely assume they are talking about the box. Im not condoning it per se, im just saying technically he didnt do anything wrong.

you guys are fvcking idiots. i hope all of you get cancer in your penis and they have to chop it off. who cares if this is illegal or legal? the fact is that he is trying to scam people. you know damn well no one would buy a box if they knew thats what it was. sure, the buyer should have known the terminology, but what if you wanted something and you were not up-to-date on the lingo that goes with it? would you expect to always get ripped a new one? no, or course not. dont give me BS like "i do 5 hours of homework before i buy stuff" or "my friend has one so i know what i am talking about." i cant believe you people think this is ok simply because it is thoroughly explained. that doesnt make it right...some people just arent as intelligent as others, and that sure as hell gives you no right to take advantage of them.

edit: spelling

He's an assclown, but what are we going to do to him? Lodge fraudulent bids? Not if you're so worried about "the cheapening" of Ebay....

BTW, buyer has been an ebay member since 10/2/2000 and has managed to pull off 17 transactions. He's not exactly a n00b.

His intentions were to sell a box. Would you be mad if it went for $3.50.

No. But the buy it now price of $500 indicates that his intent was to get a lot more than $3.50 for what amounts to kindling. (And the reserve price? How much was that? More than $3.50, I'm willing to bet.)

I applaud this guy. Hopefully the buyer will be turned off by ebay forever because of this incident, and the ebay community will have one less tard to deal with. I remember the days when you could actually get a good deal on ebay, now its just another "since its on the internet I must be paying less" site.

No one refers to a laptop as a box, only desktops.

So we're assuming the buyer is legit? What if he's scamming the seller? Or maybe he's trying to teach the seller a lesson with "Buy-It-Now," then not paying for it. In that case, either the seller reports the shady auction to eBay for NPB, or he will have to eat the cost of the auction, hehheh.

Not saying what this guy is doing is right, it most definately isn't...but from a legal standpoint no one can really touch him. He placed an item up for auction and offered a description. If some one bought that cardboard box with an X on it for $200 I guess this doesn't surprise me. There's always some one to take advantage of stupid people.

This is even better, but the seller is more a victim in this:

I remember seeing an auction awhile ago for a burned CD on how to buy laptops to sell on ebay. You know, one of those stupid things like those tech disks that have free software on them people are always selling on ebay. The guy had a lot of negative feedback from people who bought the CD for $5 and then left negative feedback because it was just a CD. "I bought a laptop!" they said in the feedback. No joke. These ads I felt were very clear what they were selling based on title and description, the title was something like "CD with leads on how to buy cheap laptops" or something like that. They did have a PICTURE of a laptop though.

Are people so stupid that they can't even be bothered to read the title of an auction anymore? Do they just see a picture of what they want and then click the mouse? Did these people honestly think they were going to get a laptop for $5? Please, I'm not going to bend over backwards trying to protect these people.

Thats a good point. Ebay does really suck now because of all the n00bs driving the cost up of goods. It was great back when only nerds used it.

Still, not condoning his actions...but anyone that dumb may wish to rethink using ebay.

Wow, pretty good split between (defending) idiots and (legit) scammers here.

I think this is one of the more legitimate auctions of this type. Most of the time the "you are getting the box only" or the "packaging materials only" is in a small part of the body filled with other crap. This one even described the 'box' in the title as well.

Lucky Seller I say.

Let the Buyer Beware.

Seriously though, no one reads anything anymore. Ebay has a whole feedback system in place to buy from reputable traders...but when people can't even be bothered to read the short description of the item before bidding what the hell good is it? Do these people just see a picture then bust in their pants in excitment and bid without realizing it? I mean, WTF? They're at least as bad as the scammer IMO. If they don't want to think about their purchase, they should go down to best buy and have the guys there tell them what they want. They'd probably end up paying less too.

The idiots are the people defending this auction. "Buyer beware", blah, blah, blah... Who cares? The auction's intent it to trick people. That should not be defended. If this was the gov't doing something like this then people would be crying foul. It may seem absurd to nearly everyone here that anyone would fall for this, but most people here are more tech savvy than your average consumer. I can see where someone might simply overlook the "box" part or simply think it's terminology for the iBook by itself with no cables (which is the intent of the part about no cables or software). Let me also add that I bet there are lots of people out there that would simply assume something like this is either illegal or not allowed on Ebay. Some people in this thread have even questioned if it was legal or allowed. So I can easily see someone less tech savvy not even considering that this could be such a scam.

To be fair, the government DOES do stuff like this all the time, people DO cry foul, and NOTHING happens.
