hi five to the seller, i see no scam

Buyer was a dumbass, yes.

Seller listed the item inappropriately with an intent to deceive his customer as you can see from the category its listed in. While he was telling the truth, his intent was to confuse uneducated consumers and this is an unethical business practice. It's not going to win him customers in the long run.

It is in the "other" category with T-shirts, pens, and other crap. It isn't listed in the actual desktop category. The first bid was for $2.00. Obviously someone who took the time to read.

I'm not saying the bidder was smart.

As for the guy bidding $500 on it, how do you know the seller wont have ethics about it and say "look man, its just a box. Id feel bad for selling it to you for $500" or he could legally just get the $500 through no form of fraud.
No selling a box dosen't make him a jerk. The fact that he posted the auction witha $500 buy it now makes him a jerk he was very purposely trying to find a stupid buyer.

And honestly I know that messing with this guy won't nessicarly change him. But at least it will tell him that people are looking and hopefully detur him from doing this BS in the future.

But he never did anything fraudulent. Putting a $500 buy-it-now doesnt mean jack-squat. It was a form of trickery but nothing so severe that we should harp on him about it. Now if he never said it was a box then youd have a case. Its the buyers fault. Yeah i feel bad for him but we dont even know how this will play out. Maybe Mr. Unethical does have Ethics and will give the guy a break. Remember, especially with Ebay, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

Or who knows? Maybe the bidder really wants the box....

Maybe he put the buy it now option in case their is a serious box collector out there that doesn't want to wait for the auction to end. Box collecting is pretty cut-throat hobby.

LOL!

Seriously, there is no scam. It stated in the text clearly that a box is being bid on. If someone bids $500 w/o looking over the litterature....DOH! on them!

The auction has been reported to eBay. Shame on those that think this auction is okay and the buyer deserves it for being stupid.

How is this guy a scammer? It clearly says that it's for a box only.

All I know is that I'm damn jealous that this guy got $500 for a box!

eBay is probably going to do nothing about this auction, especially since it already ended. Is there some rule that says you can't sell a box on eBay? People do that pretty often.

Granted that he is legally selling a box, but his description is misleading. He purposely listed the specs for the iBook which is only what is printed on the box, and people that doesn't read quite well will overlook the fact that this is a box that they're buying.

If you have an ounce of integrity and dignity, you would not forgive this weasel for purposely trying to scam people out of hundreds of dollars for something that's worth a dime. For those that say he's legit, I do hope it is your family members who are purchasing this box.

you gotta do what you gotta do. personally, i would be doing this if i had a never ending supply of boxes for expensive items.

You may sell the first few, but quickly accumluate the negative feedbacks and your business is done if they even follow up with it. I think most people will rather earn a negative than bite it and pay $500 for a box.

They're not going to do anything. The eBay people I know actually laughed at it.

His intentions were to sell a box. Would you be mad if it went for $3.50.
That is bullshlt and you know it. His intentions were to hopefully confuse someone and it worked.
What happened is exactly what he hoped would happen, that's why he put all the specs on there instead of just saying "Box for a Mac".
Anyone who says different is full of it and knows it, too.

Well I'm glad some ATers agree with me on this one. I swear I would not want to buy from some of you guys out there. Honestly I make a large part of my living selling items on ebay and this kind of BS cheapens ebay and discourages buyers from legitimate sellers on ebay.

If Best Buy were to pull a fast one like this you guys would be up in arms calling the BBB, FTC, FBI, talking class action lawsuit and all kinds of junk. I'm just trying to look out for the common man (and yes the common man is often stupid).

Typical ATOT asshat responses here. What a shock.

I sent the seller a message:

HI MR. GOUZ! I'M SORRY I MISSED YOUR RECENT AUCTION FOR THE IBOOK BOX! AS I'M SURE YOU KNOW, THESE BOXES HAVE BECOME QUITE A COLLECTOR'S ITEM DUE TO THE MISPRINT THAT MAKES ONE OF THE DESKTOP ICONS IN THE PICTURE APPEAR AS JESUS ON THE CROSS. THESE BOXES ARE EASILY FETCHING $5000 AT AUCTION, SO I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE A $500 BUY IT NOW PRICE TO SAY THE LEAST! PLEASE ADVISE IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE OF THESE BOXES THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SELL AT THIS PRICE.

REGARDS,

YURI GREGIOUS

People were selling PS2 "boxes" on ebay left and right for $200 when they first came out. Very underhanded.

Heh, the "best" one I saw (relatively speaking) was a sale of an X-Box around the time the system launched. The item was a brown cardboard box with an "X" drawn on it with a magic marker, and was clearly displayed in the auction. Someone paid a lot for it, if I recall correctly.

Second best one was people selling PS2's a year before the system came out for $700.00 or more apiece, then stating in the auction it wouldn't be shipped until system launch.

a shady tactic by the seller, but the buyer should always completely read the listing, especially when it's that short..

Lol. Good times.

I just perfer to look at it as one more way of exploiting americans

Seriously, good for the seller! He probably put the Buy it Now there as a joke, perhaps with the faint hope of this happening. I'd love it for something like this to happen if I sold something! Besides, check his feedback. It's not like he's in the habit of ripping people off.

Really, is exploitation of the stupid really that bad? Isn't that what 90% of marketing is all about? Why shouldn't we be allowed to do this?

It is deceptive because "box" is a term that I've always used to refer to a computer. So by saying box comes as is, no cables or software still would translate to me that you are just getting the basic hardware.

But I didn't actually go to the ebay link and I doubt I'd fall for it. Just saying why I think it was deceptively written.
