yep, my business plan paid off that fast.

either that, or i was at a coin shop getting rid of like fifty pounds of wheat pennies and decided to 'splurge' and spend <$20 of my proceeds.

the results? 12 coins from the random-ass neat things with little value bin, and my very own $100,000,000,000,000 zimbabwe bill. even came with a tagalong $50,000,000,000,000 bill.

pic sucks but these are everywhere. if you want a better look, GIS it.

another of the finds i really liked just because it was 'neat.' 50 cent piece from hell. or somewhere in the middle east, at least.

another shit pic, sorry, hard to focus on this stuff without natural light or a flash.

one liberian dollar. liberia, of course, paying homage to their sultan on the front.

I like foreign money. When I deal with someone out of country, I usually get them to send me some local coins. It's a cheap hobby. That Liberian coin looks like it's chocolate :^D

yeah the guys at this shop were really cool, gave me good info for sorting a gouge-your-eyes-out amount of old pennies. most valuable one was a 1914S which i think i got 8 bucks for. they identified well with the 'don't have a lot of money but like neat stuff' kind of collector. i basically paid like 20 cents for the babe ruth coin or the morocco coin. plus ten others from different places. after the above, i like the peru coin that just has a large embossed llama on the front. =D

I'm the same way. I bring back one of each coin of all the countries I visit also.

I met a guy from Zimbabwe in Australia 11 years ago who sent me one of each Zimbabwe coin at my request when he got home. At the time they were worth something, maybe half as much as American.

I don't think my $5.86 Zimbabwe dollars will get me very far any more.

the currency has totally dissolved, i think they actually use USD now. maybe euros.

in the collector world, there is fair chance you could have coins rarer than these crazy bank notes. these things are worth like 5-10 bucks on the open market, and that's only because of curious westerners. could be worth something some day, though.

i told a buddy he was getting the 50 trillion note and a nice cigar for christmas.

Yeah I read earlier today they use American Dollars, British Pounds, and South African Rand as currency now (Source is iffy at best).

I have
2 x $2
1 x $1
1 x 50c
1 x 20c
1 x 10c
1 x 5c
1 x 1c

I'll keep them for 50 years or so and see if they are worth anything then.

...that's how i made money off the pennies. my dad collected them as a kid and they sat for 50 years. had some nice shiny 50's pennies, as well as older stuff of course (1878 indian head was the oldest, sadly not worth much). i did not have much affection for a big heavy bag of pennies, so i was happy to unload them. while they were fair with the valuable stuff, the bulk of the dirty, common pennies just went through a counter for double their face value (i think they retail them for 4 cents or so, said they have people come in all the time and buy bags of 'em). i did keep some stuff, like an almost complete book of (worthless, late) wheat pennies and things like that, thinking he may have actually been completeing that book himself.

but in the end, i'd much rather have a big collection of odd and different coins than a few thousand pennies.

When my grandfather died he left each of the grand kids a portion of his coin collection. I don't even know where to start. How do you know you can trust the coin guy to be honest? I figure he might see something nice and say yeah that coin that is worth a couple hundred dollars is worth 2 bucks.

Have it appraised from a serious and reputable shop but make it clear that you are not in the market to sell. I'm sure some will be willing to share their research. Once you know what you have, search online.

I have a collection from when I was a kid. I still love to talk about it even though I haven't added a new coin in 15 years. I'm sure serious collectors and dealers feel the same about coins.

Yeah it is just overwhelming... He had a huge collection. I probably got about 6k or so coins. It was fairly organized collection but my dad and his siblings just kind of divided it among the grand kids and it got mixed up. Supposedly he had a few worth quite a bit, but no one is sure which pile they ended up in. I tried to get a book, but that was confusing, I don't have enough experience to grade them. I'll just pass them to my kids when they are old enough and let them deal with it lol.
