I think the most important thing to remember about any pet is that you can love it, feed it, take care of it, etc, but always remember it's just a pet. It's not a person or family member, but just a pet. Not saying you shouldn't love it unconditionally and cry when it eventually passes away (or gets hit by a car), but it's just a pet and should not replace a person or people in your life. I have a friend on facebook who has two kids and dogs she appears to treat equally and that's wrong.

Oh, and if you ever do end up getting a small dog, don't let it ride on your lap in the car. Shit like that pisses me off to no end when you see people driving with animals on their laps.

That wouldn't help the OP, since he rents. Our dogs have 24/7 access to outside. My mother lives next door to us. Apparently, many days, our dogs spend the majority of their time playing in the back yard, rather than laying around in the house.

It is perfect for the OP Especially since he rents.
only person in my house (renting)
Sounds like he rents the entire house. He can take the 15 minutes to slide this into the patio door frame and if he leaves it takes 5 minutes to take it out. No permanent installation and no holes in the wall.

My favorite saying "Please let me be the person my dog thinks I am."

Fen, One thing is we have doggy doors. Similar to this one. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ideal-Pe...-4-in-Standard-Alum-Slider-80PATSLM/100591700 If you have a patio door. They sit in the frame of our sliding door and the dogs can go out when they need to.

Unfortunately one of our dogs is dumb and sometimes when I come home she is outside with the look on her face of, Please let me in. I point to the doggy door and she is so happy and grateful when she comes in.

Yeah, I have a fenced in backyard with patio door doggy door. Dogs and come and go as they please but they usually just sunbath and sleep til we get home.

They need to be beaten regularly. That's the only thing you need to remember.

What is wrong with you?

I am a firm believer in the fact if you work and you have a dog, you have 2 dogs. They keep each other company and you still get all the love when you get home. Of course I have 4 dogs.

For all of those who think that they could not give a dog a good home, remember there are many dogs from shelters that get put down. I am sure those dogs would prefer to be couch potatoes in your house.

I work from home and my two puppies much prefer to be outside in their dog pen (pretty large, 50'x50') than in the house, unless the weather sucks. They're in our house from 6am-8am (sometimes 9am), then they whine at the door until I take them to the pen. They generally come back in the house ~4pm when the kids start getting home and we can walk them. I do agree that they keep themselves much more entertained than I could, and whenever I check on them they are either sleeping (of course) or chasing each other around the pen.

My sister used to help with a Great Dane rescue organization and she had up to 4 of them at a time. She kept them in the house and it's a pretty small one...I don't know how she did it. As they started passing away she didn't get new ones (her new daughter kept her busy enough) but she did just get a new one recently. They're very sweet natured and all but damn they are just too big for my lifestyle. I have relatives with full blooded German Shepherds and they are too big also.

*a guy walking a super-friendly big dog is going to meet females. A guy walking a chihuahua probably isn't.

Clearly you've never had a little dog. Have mini poodle, all of 10 lbs and regularly get stopped by women going gaw gaw over him.

as much as a cute little mini dog will work, i think a giant lovable beast will be much better. i mean, look at that face!!!

Socialization with other dogs is very important. It's not enough that your dog is a big baby with you. It's your responsibility to make sure he is calm around other dogs.

And you're right, he definitely looks goofy. Resistance is futile. Congratulations.

You won't regret getting a dog when you see that look in their eye and that little full-body wag thing they do when you get home. Even when you come home to 3 piles of shit in 3 different rooms and a puddle of piss just inside the front door.
Yeah that would be a no no for me.

If I was a woodsman or a trapper and spent all my time outdoors working and could bring a dog with me, I would get a dog.

I work indoors in an office.

you dont' have time for a dog; dogs need near-constant companionship and they go crazy if left alone for more than a couple hours.

Wrong. Especially a senior dog, will be happy to snooze all day after going for a walk in the morning. I have a fenced in backyard and doggie door and my dogs just want to sunbathe and sleep all day. And the OP will be coming home at lunch time.

We have 3 dogs and we both work 8+ hour shifts, 2 of the dogs are crated while the 3rd is free to roam her home.

Some dogs have separation anxiety (one of our dogs does, rescue), while another one likes to shred paper into tiny pieces (another rescue), but the 3rd just chills out on the couch, bed, or lays in the sun until we get home.

Dogs are easy, we have ours trained to ring a bell when they need to go out to do their business.

it is my experience of 4 dogs that they are either very needy or very messy; you either get the dog that starts to whimper the instant you shut the door, and then proceeds to cry for hours, or the dog that will chew everything the house is made of, and happily bark at anything that moves.

Sounds like you need to exercise your dogs more and/or work on training/separation anxiety issues. A tired dog is a happy dog.

My friend's dog has a condition where his gums have growths that need to be surgically removed as they grow around the teeth. He just got in to get them removed, and they told him ~$2k per surgery and he'll need three surgeries. The dog is 6 years old and happy and healthy otherwise. He doesn't even really notice the growths but they need to go as they're affecting his teeth, and how he's eating. If my friend wasn't able to afford the surgeries I have no idea what kind of life the dog would have if the growths were allowed to continue.

Shit like this can happen to any dog, at any time, and you're going to need to be prepared. Anybody who is not ready to handle a potential financial burden that high will have to make the difficult choice of having an animal suffer, or get put down early in life because they're deemed not worth the cost. Are you ready for that possibility?

1) yes
2) pet insurance

edit: T-minus 3 hours to puppy!
