I'm looking for something where I can use a couple tablespoons of grounds and pour hot water over it to make a single cup of coffee. I am NOT referring to a Keurig or pod machine. I am looking for an old fashioned pour over device. Can anyone recommend one? Seem to be lots of different options on Amazon.

I have something that looks like a funnel at the top and reusable filter, you pour boiling water down it and makes a cup. Never used it though.

The whole Hario V60 system is pretty solid imo, and not too expensive to get into. This will do more than one cup but you can make a single cup with it too. I sized it so you can make multiple cups but you can get a smaller catcher and the smaller cup attachment too... but I'd go with the 02 size so in case you want to make more than 2 cups you can.

^ that will get you started pretty well.

I have this kettle instead so I can set to 210F exactly: http://www.amazon.com/Bonavita-Varia...no+vita+kettle

so what's the point of these?

only a few cups? stronger? what?

I had a plastic one I used for camping. Light, and easy to deal with. I gave it to my daughter because I use a press when I want a single cup.

Its pretty much personal preference. There are lots of options. A gooseneck pouring kettle is recommended.

Hario V60 is good, 02 size. Use #4 cone filters folded over so you don't have to find the specific Hario filters that are imported from Japan. Non Hario filters will change the characteristics of the brewer, though. The hole in the bottom is very large, probably not the best for beginners.

Beehouse is good, I like the smaller one but it is a little small. The larger one may be the way to go, you will want #4 cone filters which are a little large for single cups. Otherwise the smaller #1 or #2 cone filter is what you want for the small beehouse. Generally #4 is the easiest to find in the supermarket.

Kalita wave is good, but again they are stuck with proprietary filters. Many say the flat bottom brewer provides even extraction. Never tried it but to me it probably wouldn't be a mind blowing difference over any other pour over cone. I value ease of finding filters and other things like that. Some have had success with using generic basket filters but you have to kind of reshape them.

There is other cone shaped pour overs like Bonmac, Clio, etc. Its all kind of the same thing generally. Also Clever Coffee dripper if you want more of immersion style brewing. I also think Bonavita makes a nice cone brewer.

Just don't get the large size #4 cone filter pour overs if you are doing single cups, because the sides are too tall.

I'm sure there are more options, this is off the top of my head. If you want cheap and durable go with Melitta one cup joe. Or a ceramic version of it.

Another thing, if you are using pre-ground coffee then you will want a single hole type brewer or immersion brewer if you like coffee with heavy body. Some like the beehouse or other ones out there have 2-3 holes on the bottom. This will make the coffee flow fast. Which means you will want a finer grind to compensate for fast brewing.

Generally, yes to both. Always a fresh cup, can tailor it to your strength preference, Optimal water temperature which cheap coffee pots don't do. Economical. For me I drink 1 or 2 cups on a workday and no need to brew a pot. So when I started pour-over I never looked back.

This is a good post. Wanted to comment on the kettles because I have both. The Bonavita electric kettle is better because of the temperature control.

The Hario kettle is nice, I keep one around in case the power goes out or the Bonavita breaks. Trouble with it is that you can't fit a thermometer into the lid without drilling a hole for it, the steam vents are too small to fit any dial or instant read type thermometer. Which makes getting the proper water temp a little more time consuming.

I use a Hario cone myself, but not because I think its the best. Its just because I could pick up the Hario gear at the mall when I didn't want to wait for it. (Williams Sonoma). I have the glass server as well but never use it. I don't recommend buying it unless you really need to make coffee for 2 people at the same time.

I have the Hario and use it often, I love it.

I've got a Gaggia espresso maker as well but sometimes just want a chance of pace or don't want to go through the work.

Aeropress is also something I find myself using occasionally as well. Just to mix it up a little. It's supposed to give a different taste experience due to pushing the coffee out the bottom (trapped oils and such) than a French press, but I'm not sure I could tell a difference.

I do like that the Hario and Aeropress both use filters, it's nice to not get sludge in that last slug from the cup. I don't use my French press any more.

I'd buy another Hario in an instant if I ever broke it. I think the Cilio in the 2nd post would be fine too. Same thing just slightly different shape (filters would be found in a grocery store, no need to mail order or visit a specialty shop).

Ahh i see. I wondered what people do who only drink 1-3 cups. I usually only drink 2-3 cups myself. to make it "good" i have to make 6 cups. for some reason with any coffee maker i have tried. trying to to make 4 cups it comes out terrible 6 cups seems to be the spot where it taste ok.

I even had a 4 cup maker. it never made good coffee.

I will have to look inot this.

I've always thought of trying a French press out myself, but haven't.

The small kettles look pretty nice.

I have had french press at a coffee shop while in college. I found they aren't to good for me since i lose track of how long it's been going. so it would come out majorly strong way to often.

With the smaller brew sizes the normal coffee makers don't have enough time to heat the water enough, so you might end up with some under-brewed type of coffee. Plus the hot plate seems to affect the taste of coffee negatively when sitting there for more than a few minutes.

obviously k-cups are popular because brewing a single cup is nice. trouble with k-cups is the brewers are cheaply built, the pods are expensive and generate a lot of waste.

Also with pour over you can use any coffee you want. Whether it be folgers or fresh whole bean from your local roaster. Takes a little more time in the morning than k-cups but you gain in quality.

I use the Aeropress for when I just want one cup and when I want more I use a Bialetti Moka pot.

Heh, came across this, I had too.

AEROPRESS - The Ultimate Tactical Coffee Maker.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKgKX2aZCmE

that video is strangely entertaining.

I've had an aeropress for over a year now, and primarily use that. It gets the job done.

Received one of these for xmas, unprompted:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NTMHRW?psc=1

and it's pretty good, too. I little less convenient than the aeropress, so I only use it on weekends. Requires something better than the typical pour spout kettle than I have--the gooseneck hipster kettle like Platypus linked would be ideal.
