What the hell people, can you read?

"Let's start a list of local things you can order from anywhere"

Giving a bunch of stuff you can only get at a certain restaurant is not very helpful.

Yeah, didn't take too long for the thread to derail. Hopefully we will still get some more neat ideas we can order though.

Little John's Toffee. 2 locations in CA but they ship. It's basically almond roca of the gods . I hate Toffee, but I'll buy hundreds of dollars worth of this shit because it is awesome.

Oh man. I just got hungry. I might have to try some of that myself (I love Toffee).

Cool thread!

For my birthday back in Feb, my GF ended up getting me a 3-month subscription for a hatchery box. Think of it as 'beer-of-the-month' club, but with different spices, sauces, rubs, etc arriving each month. When the box is delivered you have no idea what's in it. Each box comes with a brochure to describe each item, origin, price, etc. Pretty damn cool if you like to try new stuff and don't have the palette of a 9 year old.

This is pretty cool. Might try this out.

Off topic, but I never expected to see the city of Findlay, OH pop up in ATOT (original post). Way back in the day I did most of my engineering co-op in Findlay.

I buy pounds of that stuff come Christmas time. I have never found a person that did not go back for seconds. It will ruin almond rocas for you.

This looks like a god send. I was just arguing with my lady friend last night about almond extra/paste vs. vanilla. I LOVE anything almond. She hates it and says vanilla is much better. Anyways, we always get the bear-claw almond pastry things at Thanksgiving that are covered in almond slices - so fking good. I will have to remember this come the holidays....

Andrew Zimmern had a new episode of Bizarre Foods yesterday and was in Saigon. Most of the stuff I knew about but the bánh tráng nướng was something i've never heard of and must be fairly new to the food scene over there.

Basically a rice paper filled with random fillings and quail egg, grilled, and folded over, making a sorta vietnamese taco

i didn't even know rice paper did that when you grilled it; always did the soak-in-water stuff like for the rolls.

Crazy. Almost looks like bánh xèo.

my contribution would be:

a few places i can recommend this salty spicy flavor bomb of a soup noodle in Southern Cali. some shops are in El Monte, CA, and most are in Westminster, CA (the little Saigon).

Looks like mohinga. Just checked and unfortunately Burma Superstar doesn't sell food merch, only clothes. This other CA staple does though, BCD Soon Tofu in SoCal is now offering their product as a shelf-stable shippable. Korean soondooboo is some yummy stuff.

ya, it is Bun Bo Hue, a rather glamour shot of it since it is usually darker in red and thicker in oil.

If you like Little Johns, you will probably like Paso Almond's Brittle:

http://www.mouth.com/products/almond-brittle

They don't sell directly from http://pasoalmonds.com/ but you can get them from some other specialty stores that do ship, including mouth.com above.

Secret Aardvark habanero hot sauce is made locally in Portland, Oregon. It's actually available via Amazon now, so I imagine you can get it anywhere, but it's fairly ubiquitous in PDX and for good reason; it's the best hot sauce I've ever had. It's got good heat, but beyond that, it's loaded with flavor. I'm actually enjoying some with breakfast while I write this. Damn good stuff.

Just ordered, thanks for the suggestion.

Halva is cheap though - basically sesame seed paste and sweetener. You can also get marbled varieties that I assume include chocolate. Sometimes it also includes nuts.

Heh- I work for a consultant firm that's about 40 miles from there. I happened to be in town today on a job and stopped in that store.
