When I asked one of my Americans friends about what he thinks of Indonesia, he answered, " A beautiful tropical paradise ! ". I quickly assumed that probably he hasn't heard anything about the recent riots in
Indonesia, which is very understandable because most of the Indonesian news media did a very good job in concealing the situation and foreign correspondents were kept away from the real truth.
During the months of May and June, there were a series of riots that were targeted at the Indonesian-Chinese, one of the minority groups of Indonesia. The Indonesian-Chinese, who control about 75 % of the country's wealth and make up about 4 % of the entire population, have always been a target for violence. They have been tortured, killed, raped, and burnt to death. Their properties were looted. Their houses and shops were obliterated and burnt.
However, the most outrageous atrocities are the horrible sex crimes committed against the helpless Chinese Indonesian women and young children. Hundreds of Chinese Indonesian women and children were gang-raped in public; in front of their husbands, in front of their families. Many of the victims remained traumatized and some women committed suicides after their ordeals. One of the case as reported by the Indonesian National Commission for Human Rights, " ... a 10-year-old girl returning from school discovered that the shop-house where her family lived and worked had been burned. As she went in search of her parents, she was seized by two men and raped in front of her neighbors. " In another case, when the looters came and raped a little girl next door, an anonymous witness reported a heart-wrenching cries she heard : "Sakit, Ma ! Sakit ! " ( literally : It hurts, Mom ! It hurts ! )
My mother and my aunts nearly became the rape victims; they made a narrow escape from that very unfortunate event. But how many of the women have been as lucky as they were? How many of them could escape the tragedy that fell upon them ? Tears well up in my eyes as I write this to you, ladies. Even an animal would not do something as shameful as this! How could they raped and killed an innocent 10-year-old girl? She was raped not because of mistakes or sin she made, but because of the fact that she is a Chinese !
The gang-raping is believed to be a part of an organized tactic to terrorize, degrade and humiliate the Chinese Indonesians. Two aid workers from a local women's rights association said they had received telephone threats warning them to stop their investigations and their aid to rape victims. One of these, a Catholic priest named Father Sandiyawan who works at the private Jakarta Social Institute, said someone had sent him a hand grenade in the mail as a warning. Increasing evidence suggests that the assaults and the raping were well-organized. Trucks were used to transport people to the crime scene. Victims described the rapists as muscular with crew cuts. Reports have showed that the army stood by while the heinous crimes were committed. There were even reports of participation of men in green uniforms which is the uniform of the Indonesian army forces.
I lived my first 15 years of life in Indonesia. I lived among the people who blatantly stared at me for no apparent reason. I lived among the strangers who always shouted and jeered " Cina ! Cina ! " ( literally : Chinese ! Chinese ! ) as I walked by. I know how it felt to be a second-class citizen. And I am not surprised to see that up until now, the Indonesian government has done absolutely nothing to resolve the condition. I am very insignificant, therefore I can only make an urgent plead to everyone: the people, the news media, the world community, the international agencies, and the government of all nations, to :
- Raise international awareness of the atrocities committed against the Chinese-Indonesians.
- Provide supports to the victimized Chinese-Indonesians.
- Urge the Indonesian government to take immediate and strong actions to prevent further violence against Chinese Indonesians.
- Demand a thorough investigation of the crimes and punish the perpetrators.
- Implore the Indonesian government to safeguard the human rights of its minority citizens.
- Grant refugee status to the Chinese-Indonesians whose lives are in extreme danger.
Recent reports show that the assaults on the Chinese Indonesians continue up to this day. Such injustice and inhumane treatment of fellow human beings definitely can't be ignored. Your support and action will provide much needed relief to the suffering victims. The atrocious and heinous crimes against humanity must be stopped, and justice needs to be upheld. Write, send or fax your letter of concerns to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs. Mary Robinson, to show that you care. RAPE OF CHINESE ETHNIC WOMEN IN JAKARTA
Indonesian from Chinese ethnic and women are helpless and easiest targets. Tens or perhaps even hundreds of Indonesian Chinese ethnic women had became victims of sexual harrassment and rape which took place while their homes or shops were torched and looted during May 13 and 14 riot in Jakarta. So evil the perpetrator were, it seemed that they had lost their humanity.
The victims were not only harrassed or raped, but some also strangled and killed. Some endures very serious mental disorder. Considering victims trauma and fear to reveal what had happened, volunteer workers took proactive actions, by searching for victims, visiting hospitals, and establishing hotlines. So far, this team had identified about 50 cases. Each day, around two dozens women called their hotlines. Below are some harrassment and rape cases identified by Women Division, the joint group of volunteers from various caring organizations, as told by their coordinator, Ita Nadia.
While workers were heading home after work on a bus, passangers were sorted out. The Chinese ones were forced to leave the bus, undressed and walked in line. Then they were led to grass plain where they were sorted out again. Good looking ones were raped.
Meanwhile the rest were forced to walk around naked. Another modus, Chinese women were undressed by a crowd on the street, then groped. We had found torn nipples and bruises all over the body. Then there are bank employees. Ten men entered a bank and closed it. The Chinnese employees were forced to dance around naked. Also there's three daughters of a poor Chinese family were raped. They were 10 to 18 years old, raped by seven men somewhere in North/West Jakarta.
Next is a family which the victims' elder sister reported to Ita Nadia that her two sisters were raped in the third floor of their home by seven men. After that, the two girls were pushed into the burning second and first floor, to their deaths. Those were some cases. Other cases, usually the women were rapen and strangled. But there's also some that commit suicide when raped. The victims were not only raped vaginally, but also anal, followed by vagina mutilation. It happened so sistematically, it can't be done by ordinary people. Politically, I wanted to say these were done to show," If you want reform, this is a price you pay. And it is by sacrificing Chinese ethnic, in this case women were targeted to build up terror or fear in society to intimidate people. So they pick Chinese ethnic and women and non Moslem because they are the weakest."
Volunteer team for humanity, Women Division, were in fact a bigger volunteer team for humanity led by Romo (Father) Sandyawan. The team had identified riot death toll up to 1,333. Now we are really angry because women had became target or object to intimidate people using sexual violence. This is a state violence.
RADIO NEDERLAND: What message would you like to relay to victims which untill now have not or dare not reveal what had happened to them? ITA NADIA: Please, don't be afraid because breaking the silence is building awareness. Victims can directly called our hotline 021-790 2109 or 021-790 2112. We will keep victims and informants anonymous. And to the world, support us. Support in campaign to condemn what had happend. Above all else, they were discriminated, previously discriminated by the government, and now they are being sacrificed.
