Question Attaching CPU cooler Block back plate to MotherBoard

Im building a new PC (my 5th build) and ive come across a new problem. Before mounting my new MB in the case, i want to attach the backplate for mounting my cpu cooler unit.

The backplate has "legs" which go through the MB from the back and are then secured using stand off posts. My assumption is that these are meant to hold the backplate tightly so that when attached the cooler pump is securely fixed to the MB.

However, the "legs" seem to be too long and when they are fully tightened, there is approx 5mm gap between the bottom of the stand off and the mb, allowing movement. Thisnsurely can't be right?

Am i being stupid, or does anyone have any suggestions of what to do next?

A picture would be helpful here. Also the info on the cooler might shed some insight as to the potential issue.

The whole backplate thing can be a real PITA though sometimes. They're a bit fiddly until you get things locked down completely. Some of them have spacers for certain CPUs and others don't. Some kits ship with both Intel / AMD pieces while others are more specific to one or the other.

As you an hopefully see, when the stand off screws are fully tightened into the back plate, they don't meet the MB, some of the leg is still poking through. The only thing I can think to do is get some plastic spacers to fix the back plate away from the MB

I suspect when you put the top plate/mount on it will be fine. I don't think things will be moving around once you clamp the top/bottom together using the stand offs.

I suspect when you put the top plate/mount on it will be fine. I don't think things will be moving around once you clamp the top/bottom together using the stand offs.

I think techjunky is likely correct. When you mount the pump block and secure it with the thumbscrews it will pull the back plate in tight like a clamshell.

So, you think that, even though right now I have about 5mm play on all 4 stand offs, when I put the cooler block on the processor and tighten down the thumbscrews, that 5mm will disappear authenticate cooler block and back plate pull together?

That sounds plausible. Have you had experience of that before?

Things have a tendency to come together when not in pieces. There's the backplate the there should be a piece that is between the mobo/CPU/cooler typically.

When I switched to AMD I took off the stock retainer and put in an aluminum block retainer that took the place of the release mechanism. There is probably something similar with the pump to make it flush with the CPU and dissipate additional heat.

I remember watching a YouTube video a while back where a guy removed his block while the motherboard and everything was still in the case. The backplate fell out and went down behind the motherboard tray. It wasn't necessarily the same AIO that you have but it's plausible that the back plates are not held in tight until you install the pump block.

Did you ever figure this out? I was about to mention that there are two different sets of thumbscrews with different heights to account for the different package heights between some of the different CPUs. You need to make sure you are using the correct one for your CPU socket.

I would think after you tighten the screws, it wouldn't matter if those are sticking out.

I used to have waterblock backplates which all stuck out, and once the top mounting plate was screwed on, it would provide the required tension.
The best way to check is mount the heat sink, and see if you get a Thermal paste Print on the IHS of the cpu.
