Attack of the microwave!

Yeah, isn't this cool.

I have a D-Link 524 54mbps router located in the kitchen (half is a kitchen, half is a computer work area). Everytime someone uses the microwave, my signal gets lost upstairs (kitchen is on the first floor). The computer in the kitchen, also using a wireless connection, has no problems (I guess because it's like three feet away from the router). As soon as the microwave finishes, the connection upstairs comes right back.

What's the best solution to this?

I do have a free cable connection for the modem and router upstairs, but if I move it upstairs, will the signal be lost on BOTH computers when the microwave is used? I know I'll probably have to just try it to find out, but it's in my sister's room, and she hates having computer stuff cluttering it up lol.

I have it on channel 5, btw.

A newer microwave might be less 'noisy', but, frankly, there's no good solution to this -- the 802.11 frequency band is right at the frequency that microwaves (and 2.4Ghz cordless phones) use.

I would guess that if you put the router upstairs, the upstairs computer would not have a problem, but the one in the kitchen might lose signal whenever the microwave is on. You'll really have to try it, though; these things are very dependent on the specifics of your setup.

back in college my CRT was right next to the microwave. all sorts of neat colors happened when something needed cooking . sorry i cant help with your specific problem! i would just changing the location of the router / comps to try and get the signal out of the microwaves space.

This has gotta be some kind of MAC-address conflict. On the microwave, click Start > Run > cmd and type ipconfig /all and see what its Physical Address is.

go into your default gateways/routers and change the channel being used by the wireless.(say from 1 to 6 or 11) the microwave's interference might only be intruding into some of the frequencies available.

I'm too many hops away for interference!

hehe. I imagine it would not due to the fact that it is in a computer environment...also, I do not use wireless, so I had been talking about just my plain old Linksys router with cables and all >_<

Hey shuttleteam whats that picture on your homepage: www.shuttleteam.com.

Thats not an MSK and the orbiter still doesn't use color for their displays except for the flight controls. Plus most Shuttle and Station info are separate so you wouldn't have a display with ISS C&W and Orbiter C&W on it

Sorry to hijack the the thread for moment curiosity just go the better of me
