ATTBI + Router Please Help

This is just strange, I've never had this happen with Mediaone or @Home.

I have 2 computers, 1 XP Pro and 1 Home hooked up through a Linksys Router connected to my ATTBI cable modem. I can get online (obviously) but two things happen.

1. The connection comes and goes at will, I went for several hours this afternoon just fine but tonight I can't stay on more than a few minutes. The router and modem are fine, its like XP can't stay connected.

2. Random pictures just don't download. (probably related to above but very strange that some do and others don't)

Now I can get myself hooked back up by disabling and then enabling the network connection. This works lets say 75% of the time. Otherwise I just do it again and it eventually works. At this point AOL was better even though it was slow and only on one computer at least it didn't just STOP for no reason.

I did go in and reconfigure the router, just took out the specific router and domain names, they specifically refered to @Home so it wouldn't work until I did that. Otherwise I followed their instructions for resetting XP and for resetting the router. I have a feeling I'm missing something easy, its just crazy that it stops and starts at will. If anyone has any idea PLEASE help.

I just got my connection back tonight (NorthWest of Chicago).

I think they're still tinkering with the local network. I've been running a stream of ping to the gate, and the three DNS servers they offered......every now & then (about the time it takes to stare at a router config, decide something else to "try," then try it....followed by a power cycle).....they go away...then come back.....then go down ...etc.

Service is likely to be flakey until they get the whole net back up & <cough> stable.

I gotta tell ya though, I've been on this system over a year...then it went down Saturday and I had to use a modem...when I go home tonight, reconfigured the system, and saw the first non-ATT web page.....I almost screamed "F R E E D O M " at the top of my lungs (ala Mel Gibson in BraveHeart).....gawd it's good to back to fast...

Hang in there...if the problem doesn't get better in a couple days, try talking to the support desk.

I had similar problems here in Seattle. My router was assigned three DNS servers through DHCP, then propogated them out to my PC's, again via DHCP.

Unfortunately, of the three, only ONE worked right. I had to hard-set my XP PC to that DNS server (63.240.76.4) and all oddities disappeared. Strange thing is that my old '98 box seems to be quite happy with the DHCP-supplied DNS settings. Odd. Perhaps it picked a different one as primary, one that worked.

I guess the word is.. Try all the DNS servers hard-set on your PC that are assigned to your router. YOu'll eventually find one that works and life will go on again.
