Thanks for the tip on vitaglo.com, buang-jim. That is a great price on the EAS Simply Protein product, which I have heard tastes great in the vanilla and chocolate versions.
Many bodybuilders also swear by the Optimum Nutrition brand whey, which is available for $48.95 for a 10 lb. bag from DPS Nutrition. To consolidate some of the thoughts above, Optimum, EAS, and Ultimate are three of the rare brands of wpc that don't add fillers or useless carbs.
To make your own great-tasting shake, add in about a 1/4 packet of sugar-free instant pudding. Butterscotch and pistachio pudding go great with vanilla whey, while chocolate pudding and chocolate whey with an added teaspoon of instant flavored coffee makes a great mocha shake. I add in ice cubes and a couple of packets of sweetener (use sucralose if you are in the "aspartame is poison" camp). Lemon sugar-free pudding, if you can find it (I get the Kroger brand) is great, especially when you add in some fat-free cottage cheese to get a bit of cheesecake taste. I also add in a tsp. or two of psyllium powder--aka, Metamucil powder. I use the unflavored Equate brand from Walmart.
To make a correction of mboy's post, peanut butter is mostly polyunsaturated fatty acids. These are almost exclusively omega-3's. Flax oil is also mostly polyunsaturated, but with the majority coming from omega 6's. Many nutritionists point to an imbalance in omega 3's versus omega 6's as being harmful, and this is something to be cognizant of. Barry Sears's "Zone" books talk about this at length, focusing on how an overabundance of omega 3's can lead to harmful eicosanoid production. Monounsaturates are something else again, having basically a neutral effect on the body (and being non-essential); some good examples of predominately monounsaturated dietary fats would be olive oil and macedamia oil. No offense, mboy, but for a competitive bodybuilder, you've got a somewhat shaky grasp of nutrition. I will also side with JohnyBallGame in the wpc vs. whey isolate comparison.
The "hot deal" on omega 6's is either "Health From the Sun" flax oil from DPS Nutrition, or the 300-count bottles of fish oil capsules from Sams Club that cost about $8.00.
