I used to work for Canon and have loads of ink just sitting around. The heads on the new printers are lifetime though

I have to say BUY THE REAL THING.

The knock off ink is very obvious and 9 out of 10 problems I had was people putting crap ink into the printer and clogging the heads.

Canon has 900 patents on their inks alone - dont short yourself...and if you PM me I might be able to sell some of it and under retail prices

You'd be surprised. In my old architectural office, we would go through at least two toners per year. The cost for the toner was something like $150CDN. You can buy alot of black in for that price.

So what if a laser cartridge cost $150. A typical laser cartridge that cost $150 will produce a 20,000 page yield based on 5% page coverage. I know this to be true because I'm an expert in the electrophotographic process of laser cartridges and I've done lots and lots of testing. For example an inkjet cartridge that cost $15 dollars, but only produces about 500 pages based on 5% coverage.

$150 laser cartridge @ 20,000 page yield = $0.0075 cost of toner per page.
$15 inkjet cartridge @ 500 page yield = $0.03 cost of ink per page.

As you see the inkjet cost 4 times more than the laser cartridge in the example.

The reason to buy an inkjet is if you don't have a high volume of printing which would not justify the cost of a higher priced laser printer. It is normally ideal for the home user to buy an inkjet printer.

Most consumer laser printers only yield 5000 pages per their own specs- usual price 85$ or so.

Canon inkjet cartridges black cost about 2$ for 500 pages

Canon is the better deal in this case. . .

the problem with this is, canon charges around $40 for an entire new set of 4 ink tanks, which is about half the price of the printer already. So seeing as how the lower quality ink would only be around $10, it's hard to argue that clogging the printhead would be worth the risk when you can at least get through 5 cycles of imitation ink on the printer and still have money left over to buy an entirely new printer.

Where in the world are you getting 500 page yield ink for $2. When you compare prices you should with oem prices, and not aftermarket crap. I can manufacture cheap laser cartridges too, but that would not be good for my rep. Dude I work in this industry and know what i'm talking about. I know most all of the huge aftermarket inkjet manufactures. There is a big problem in the ink industry with getting the aftermarket ink right. 95% of the inkjet remanufacture out there have 20 to 50 percent reject rate. The epson and canon ink tanks that don't have the printhead are a little easier, but for the most part aftermarket inkjets are not up to par with the oem, I'm sad to admit. I am within an organization that is currently organizing a standardize test method, similiar to what we have for all in one toner cartridges, but made strickly for ink. We are hoping this will help the situation and make companies follow standards to repeat quality.

Oh, here is a list of cost per page senario's comparing some toner to ink. These are oem prices.

I use the USA ink that tylermartin.com sells but I buy it from their stores on eBay. For some reason it is cheaper than thru their own web site. On eBay it is USAinkjet that sells the USA carts and tylermartin1 sells the Rainbow brand - they are both parts of tyler-martin (unless there is more than one ink cartridge outfit in Marysville, Kansas)... Last I looked, I can get a set of four tanks for my iP3000 for $12. shipped. I definitely like the USA rather than the Rainbow - much richer color.

link? I'm fairly interested in this option if the ink won't blog up the inkhead and is cheaper than OEM.

I'm trying to educate to guys.
Just because the cartridge is cheaper doesn't mean your saving more money. Just because the printer is cheaper doesn't mean your saving more money.

When you look to buy a printer do some research on cost per page.
Find what cartridges that printer uses and find the yield of that cartridge.

Cost of cartridge divided by the yield will give you that cost per page.

For example:

Canon BCI-21 - 200 page yield
$8.95(oem) - staples
$0.04475 - cost ink per page

Canon BJC-642 - 800 page yield
$29.95(oem) - staples
$0.0374375 - cost ink per page

The $8.95 cartridge cost more to use than the $29.95 one.
Also if a printer cost 20 or 30 dollars more it may possible a benefit to buy the more expensive printer in the long run due to cost of ink per page being lower. Why do you think they sell printers so cheap. They lose money on the cost of the printer, but they make their money back on the consumables. This is the marketing concept that they use.

Also keep in mind that your not going to get the exact yield out of your cartridge that they advertise. Most OEM's use a 5% page coverage in the test procedure. If your printing an average of for example 10% the actual yield will be approx. half of the advertised estimated yield. Also density settings along with temp and humidity can play a factor. The estimated yield rating is there for costing estimation.

Its just depends on your printing needs and usage. If you do a high volume of printing then a laser printer will justify your needs. A laser printer will not do anybody good if they don't print much althought sometimes there are decent home version lasers that are practical. Also if you want color an inkjet obviously would be better in that area with small volume. With the need for color and high volume situations color laser produce great quality though that is much better than inkjets, not in resolution but in consistancy.

Canon, Epson and some high-end HP units use ink tanks. All other carts have an integrated print head (Lexmark, most HP). Canon = lowest cost ink + lowest cost to replace print head + high output quality = the inkjet printer for most people...

wseyller, thanks for injecting some real world numbers into this discussion. I just shake my head when many people see the cost of the BCI-21 and BCI-24 black carts and get all excited about the low cost, not realizing how tiny the yield is compared with the BCI-3e. Me, I'm actually partial to the HP 50 and 90 series cartridges, mainly because the yield is decent (around 500 page or so for a 56 black cart that costs me at most $20 - usually lower when I find a deal) and I have the flexibility to run 6-color on my multifunction if I want to.

Canon does make some nice photo printers, though. I just get a bit annoyed at them when they try to pass off the four-color Pixmas as a "photo" printers in their advertising literature. I personally think that is a bit deceptive, since you aren't going to get the same color reproduction as you are on a six or eight color machine. Espeically with those 24bk and 24c carts. I wish Canon would join the vendors like HP and Epson who reserve the "photo" tag for their machines that do at least six colors, and advertise the rest as simply color printers.

I own a Canon i960 and I refill my cartriges using the Stratitec Injet Refill kit. I buy it from Sam's Club for about $16. They are the only one that sell this kit. I had been using it for about a year and have no problems. This kit includes 3 bottle of black ink and one each of the color ink including phot cyan and photo magenta.
