Thanks for all the help. I found a combo deal with my memory for the 4440 and since this isn't a main rig it was worth saving the $35. Combined with buying a $45 H81 motherboard I think I did ok vs my original plan of the Haswell refresh CPU.

I first wanted to thank you guys for this thread. I think it's fantastic! I don't keep up with the latest hardware trends, like I did when I was younger, so this is a huge help.

So I was wondering if anyone had a crystal ball, or maybe just a gut feeling, as to when it would be a good time to buy a budget gaming build? As it stands (as of 2-13-15), the OP states that right now is a good time.

I'll be blunt: This week is not a good week to buy a $500 computer. :\ Prices are up, so choices are down.

That's just me complaining about this week's prices compared to last week. The difference isn't all that much - less than $50.

If I knew when would be a good time to buy stuff in the future I'd be making a killing on the stock market.

EDIT: It looks like that deal actually died on the shipping Saturday though. And now it is completely dead.

Honestly, this thread was enough for me to get started. I was able to piece together something I'm happy with for a price I'm happy with. No separate thread needed!

Do the A78 and A85X chipsets overclock well? (Maybe even the low-end A75?) I've been restricting myself to A88X because I wasn't sure. If they do overclock well that could make a huge difference!

I did see one review on that ASUS A78 reporting a 4.5 Ghz OC on a A8-5600K.

However, another review by Michael B on 12/19/2014 reported his ASUS A78 board came with 0401 BIOS and he can't boot his Athlon x4 860K unless it has the 0701 BIOS. So for new builders that is something to consider.
