Greetings!

This weekend I plan to purchase the parts for a new build. My budget is $1400-1700. I have a mouse, keyboard and monitor already. I plan to use a lot of the recommended parts mfenn has listed under his latest build but wasn't sure where the extra money should go. I plan to use the system mainly for gaming (RPGs and MMOs, though maybe some FPS). I also need a headset and would like a HAF case. I would like the ability to OC a little but nothing absurd. Where and what would you change on mfenn's latest $1000 system that would fit my budget?

Thanks for any advice and information. This is a wonderful resource and I am glad someone took the time to make it.

Ryan

I would definitely bump up the GPU to the GTX 670 and add a HSF like the Scythe Mugen 3. If your monitor is 1920x1200 or smaller, there is no reason to go higher than the GTX 670 on the GPU.

The rest of the money could be spent on doubling the SSD capacity to 256GB and/or getting a very nice headset like the Sennheiser PC 360.

Newegg put up some pretty sick promos this week. Maybe should edit the OP?

MSI 7850 for 210 AR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-14127663-L06C

Check the whole list out (have to be e-mail subscriber):
http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemai...EFL071212-_-EMC-071212-Index-_-E0-_-PromoWord

I'd say the most interesting things on the Newegg list are the 400R for $80 (good deal) and the 7850 that you pointed out. I was able to fit a 7870 into the budget already, though the $210 7850 is a great choice for somebody looking to spend less than $1000.

Would like to note some price changes in the build:
The NZXT Hale is now $116 after shipping, no promo or rebate.
The Crucial M4 went down again to $120, still $10 more than in the listed build.

Some good news, the Antec Three Hundred Two is now $55 AR.
You could also change the optical drive to this Samsung DVD Burner for $4 less with a promo code for free shipping for roughly the next week.
I'd also swap out the storage drive for this Seagate Barracuda for $90, the larger cache than the Hitachi is nice though I'm not entirely sure how much it will manifest in terms of performance difference.

Heyas! Made a few changes to my build, just wanted to get some feedback. Is my case selection ok with everything I want? The PSU is overkill but would allow a SLI setup down the road right?

You should pick up the motherboard at Micro Center as well as they'll give you $50 off if you buy the 3570K at the same time as the motherboard (pretty sure that deal is still in effect).

Pick up this Samsung 830 128GB for $90 instead, slightly better drive for a decent amount less than the M4.

No reason to spend the extra $9 on the RAM over this G.SKILL Value 8GB.

And I'm not a fan of that PSU, but it should be fine.

I was't sure the SSD. Everyone seemed to recommend the M4 but if the Samsung is indeed better than I will definitely go with that. I wasn't sure on memory, so will happily take the G.Skill Values at a cheaper price. What would you go with for a PSU if the one I listed doesn't do it for you? I saw it on another list and for the price, seemed pretty good but I am definitely open. Figured it is better to ask the people that know then to guess on my own. Thanks for the feedback!

Comments on your build Nitelite -

CPU Good
Cooler Good
Mobo Get it from MC

RAM Tall fins don't fit under Scythe Mugen 3 or most other heatsinks for that matter. Here.

HDD $50 / TB, not bad... But I'd just get a 2TB drive for $108.

SSD Samsung 830 128GB $123 on Amazon

GPU Good, I'd prefer Gigabyte 670 though, quieter and cooler

Case Get a USB 3.0 compatible case. Antec 1100 $95 shipped, Corsair 400R $83 AR AP shipped, Lian Li K9WX $80 shipped just to name a few

PSU Definitely not an 80Plus PSU with 3-year warranty for a $1200 PC. I would recommend PC Power & Cooling MK II 750W for $70 AR AP. 80+ Silver, 7-year warranty. Consider the PSU a long term investment. Easily powerful enough for SLI and all the overclocking you could ever want.

Optical Good

  The Silencer Mk III series is also a good choice right now. It's "only" 80Plus Bronze, but the 600W version is $55 AR AP right now.

Thanks for checking things out for me! I am somewhat biased against Samsung DVD burners because they always seem to stop reading discs for me after 6 months or so. I haven't had a Lite-ON fail yet. Not that my sample size is really big enough to be making a statistically-valid decision though.

BIG thanks to everyone who helped me find deals this week! With the price cuts on the case, CPU, mobo, and HDD, I was able to fit a 7950 3GB under $1K! That's pretty amazing when you consider that around 2 months ago, the same build with a 7850 was over $1000.

Greetings! I wanted to thank you all for your help. I ordered all my parts last night and am heading to MicroCenter in an hour to pick up the CPU and MB (thanks for the heads up on that deal). This is my build.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($214.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Scythe SCMG-3000 74.2 CFM CPU Cooler ($44.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($132.86 @ Newegg)
Memory: Samsung 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($47.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($149.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Samsung 830 Series 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($124.95 @ B&H)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 2GB Video Card ($399.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Cooler Master HAF 922 ATX Mid Tower Case ($89.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($79.99 @ Microcenter)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $1303.73
(Prices include shipping and discounts when available.)

The HAF case was a little more since SuperBiiz didn't have the newer USB 3.0 one. Stayed with 3 GB HD as I really need the space. Overkill on the PSU still but at that price, i am fine with it. This whole thing still came way under budget so really excited. Thanks all again. I appreciate the knowledge sharing.

Total came to $1,324. Ordered from NewEgg and Microcenter exclusively. Probably could have done a little better in some areas but I am happy with it.

Nice rig! I'm sure you will be happy with it. Post a build log thread when you get it up and running (or if you have any questions).

the 600w psu is also modular (the 750w isn't)

thanks for this thread too - it's helpful, especially since i think i'll be building something soon. i just wish there was a microcenter closer to me!

Total: $919.83
(Prices include shipping and discounts when available.)

I think I'll be going with the build above. I will likely order everything from Newegg though, since there isn't a Microcenter near me (and even if there was, I'd only be picking up the mobo and cpu from there).

I already have a Bluray burner and I picked up a Samsung 830 128 gb ssd for 90 bucks from that deal on Newegg a little bit ago. I'll also be using an old hdd for storage in addition to the ssd. I also picked up some extra case fans for the hell of it.

If everything is ordered from Newegg, the total is $1018.91 with about $95 in rebates/Newegg gc's (but I can't forget about the ssd I purchased, which just about cancels this out).

edit: pulled the trigger on this. switched the video card for the one on sale on Newegg for 210 (MSI 7850)

I know you already ordered, but there are a few issues with this build:

- Mobo: not worth the money over the Z77 Pro3 if you don't plan on dual-GPU (which is silly with a $200 card anyway).
- RAM: 16GB is useless for most tasks especially gaming. You didn't mention what you plan to do with the system, but unless you know for a fact that you will need more than 8GB, this is overkill
- PSU: Way overkill on wattage for a single GPU, the recommended Mk III would be plenty.

Making the changes recommended above would put you close to GTX 670 territory for the same overall expenditure. It would certainly get you a 7950.

thanks, mfenn. i can see about switching down to an extreme4, but i dont mind having spent 50 more for the extreme6. for the PSU, figured it would be an investment down the road if i went for a crazier build in the future. ram was so cheap i didn't really care, but point taken regarding its uselessness beyond 8 gigs

edit: looks like i can't make changes to the order at this point. seems like a more practical configuration with the extreme4 and 8 gigs of ram would've saved me around 100 bucks.

Some updates:

1. 3570K + Z77 Pro 3 combo no longer seems to exist.
2. RAM is OOS (had a rebate at the time though).
3. Case no longer has promo or rebate.
