Here is the list of more than 280 K-Mart stores that will be shut down. Inventories to be liquidated in a 6-month to 2-year period.

Doomed K-Marts

Please be nice to the employees--they are losing their jobs

Ouch, this is horrible. 284 stores is huge.

I feel bad for all of the employees that will be affected.

The only two Kmarts that I go to are on the list.

Kmart used to be awesome! Benchtop tools, good mens clothes at good prices, and just a well rounded dept store. Until... they hired Penny Marshal, Rosie Odonnel, and Martha Stuart! These bitches killed Kmart! Whoever made the mistake of hiring them should be the first to lose thier job.

There are four or five within 20 miles of me, and they are closing the only one I have never been to.
Just goes to show, if you open a store in northern VA, it will make money.

According to CNBC, the content of the list is more related other internal factors than actual store profit. Several of the stores on the list are Super K-Marts open less than a year. He listed several factors used to determine the closing of a particular store. The primary factor for "making the list" was K-Mart's current ownership of the store property. They will be closing stores all stores that are using leased space vs company owned property.

Same here...there are a dozen or so stores near me that I have seen or been into, and the only one they're closing is one 5 miles away that I have not been to...I guess not too many other people have been there, and that's why they're closing :Q I sure wish they'd close all of them; Kmarts around here look worse than flea markets and occupy a huge amount of space that could be better utilized.

<< I thought Martha Stewart was part of Wal-Mart. *ponder* >>

No, Kathie Lee Gifford is part of Wal-Mart...Martha Stewart and Kathy Ireland are with K-Mart.

The K-Mart closest to where I live is on that list. 1 of 2 getting closed here, and I think we have 5 total.

5 or 6 of em in my area, the one farthest from me is the one getting closed down. Most of the Kmarts around here though are in strip malls or power strips.

Happy to see the one closest to me is not closing...now i'll still be able to get Christmas lights there. (yes, that's right, i get my Christmas lights ONLY from KMart...I only buy the White-Westinghouse lights that they have, because I like having all of my lights be the same...make sense?)

I feel sorry for those emplyees who will lose their jobs, but I can't feel sorry for this company. I gave up on Kmart over 5 years ago when it became quite routine for them to not have stock on hand for items that were advertised. This happened week in and week out and after complaining to store management (and to Troy MI HQ) and waiting for years for them to rectify their problems (the only thing they changed were CEO's about once a year) I took my business elsewhere (Walmart, Target etc.) This has to be one of the worst run US direct consumer related companies. Just my 2 cents.

says 6 months to 2 years....
A service merchandise type of final sale liquidation?
5% OFF everything first 2 months, 10% OFF second 2 months, 15 % off next 6 months, and then a grand 20% off for the next year or two!

I bet those K Mart insiders know this bad new way earlier than us. Couple weeks ago, I was in Kmart, which just installed some U-scan. An old man had problem to use it, and yelled for help. There were several kmart employees around, but they just kept chatting. No one came to help. The angry old man cried that he would leave if nobody came to help. Sure none of those employees would move. I did not stay long enough to see if that old man got all his stuff w/o paying.

Yeah... Kmart pretty much sucks... I remember when I was camping out for the Xbox at Target. About 7 am a bunch of Kmart campers showed up... it turned out that the Kmart got a whopping TWO Xbox's in stock for release day. Needless to say that Kmart is on the crapper list. I just hope it doesn't become another nasty empty strip mall.

Looks like texas got hit the hardest. California got away cheap. I really thought CA would have many more stores close but I guess they must own the land that most of them are on. I don't like K-mart but this will hurt the economy and those employees will have a tough time finding jobs.

Holy Cow!! :Q That's a big list for Texas! Lucky the one in New York City isn't closing. I don't go there much, but it's nice to know that it's open. I hope the employees can find something else...

I agree with the chant that Tom Cruise taught Dustin Hoffman in Rainman: "K-mart Sucks."

They not only abuse their customers, they are one of the most anti-labor stores around.

K-Mart opened a new megastore in Oakland with city financial support on the understanding that they'd hire local people. But they tried to pay minimum wage. In this area a full time minimum wage income won't even cover the rent on the cheapest rat trap studio, and besides, there are plenty of better paying jobs around, so surprise-surprise, they got the bottom of the barrel employees. The workers simply don't care and who can blame them at those live-in-your-car and still starve wages. So check out was an ordeal, even if there was only one person in front of you. In the meantime, the local unionized supermarkets have fast, efficient well-paid checkers who crank through much longer lines in a fraction of that time. And K-Mart can't understand why they are experiencing so much employee-related inventory loss!

I stopped going to K-Mart entirely, since the prices were no lower than the other chains and the service was terrible. Finally, I went there at 2 AM a couple of months ago thinking I could get in and out quickly at that hour. I filled my cart and got to check out and found that there was a long line of folks waiting for 5 U-Scan machines and one harried employee ringing up sales and trying to supervise the befuddled shoppers. It would probably have taken a half hour of my time to get out of there in order to save the company 30 cents of employee time checking me out promptly. I just abandoned my cart and went to another store. K-Mart deserves to go tits up. Maybe Fry's will move into all the old locales and we won't have to see all the "Why isn't there a Fry's next to me?" posts.

The K-mart local to me is closing. I thought it had pretty steady business.
Maybe it just can't compete with the Target opposite of the street
