Since we Prescott owners are always getting a bad rap about the temps of our CPUS lets see if we can get a handle on just how hot a Preshot really is.

To help with this please provide the following info if you own a PRESCOTT based Pentium 4 only. (We all know Northwoods are cooler)

Speed (Ghz):
Socket:
Idle Temp(C):
Max Temp(C):
Mobo Idle Temp(C):
Mobo Max Temp(C):
Cooling Solution:
Case:
No of Case Fans:
Mobo:
Monitoring Software:
Notes:

So for my own machine it would be the following:

Speed (GHZ): 3.2Ghz
Socket: 478
Idle Temp (C): 44
Max Temp(C): 58
Mobo Idle Temp(C): 29
Mobo Max Temp(C): 33
Cooling Solution: Stock HSF
Case: Coolermaster Praetorian
No of Case Fans: 4 80mm
Mobo: Asus P4P800 E
Monitoring Software: Asus Probe
Notes: Used 1 instance of Prime 95 and 1 of 3dmark 03 for max temps

This wont tell you anything. I own a p4p800, and with my northwood I idle @ less then ambient temp according to the asus probe. Board probe readings are pretty much useless in compairing across boards.

Thats the reason I asked for the monitoring software. What I would like to get out of this is that if somebody buys a Prescott they can get an idea of what their temps should be. If they get an Asus mobo then they can look here and see what temps others with the Prescott/Asus combo got. I know there's about a 10 deg C difference between Abit and Asus monitoring software.

And quite frankly just because the sensors got a bias doesn't make it useless. Just correlate your sensor bias to a better temperature monitor and no problems. Its not rocket science

for testing temp under load I recommend using calculator to compute the following equation:

sin 4exp1500=

Whoa

How may volts are you putting through that?
What HSF are you using?

I got 1.575 running through it (bumped up from 1.525) and I'm using the retail HSF. my case is even open and I'm using arctic silver 5. The heat sink gets too hot to touch under full load.

it is what it is I guess. If the room chills down to 26-27 C, my cpu load gets under 65 C.

use cpuz to see how much L2 cache you have. if it is 1mb, you have a prescott.

Thanks. I am quite surprised actually. I thought they would be higher.

The (4) 80mm Panaflo L1A's, and the (1) SilenX 1600 RPM 90mm Fan are pretty quiet too!

I've got a 3.0E with a Thermalright XP-120. I get about 37-43 on idle and about 49-53 underload. While underload the clock is at about 3.5GHz

Depends. In general the Northwood is slightly faster and a bit cooler but the Prescott is generally cheaper. The faster the Prescott is however the closer they are. At 3.6 the Prescott is faster. Of course the northwood only goes up to 3.4. In a few cases the Prescott out does the Northwood. Doom III is the prime example of this.

I think I'll eventually replace my 4 80mm coolermaster sleeve bearing fans with some panaflos. I've got them on a Vantec fanbus to keep em quite but I probably wouldn't have to with the panaflos.

Just a question to put out there for reference as well... what stepping are your CPUs? It seems that Intel released the D0 stepping for socket 478 which is supposed to run cooler. Unfortunately mine's C0 stepping, so my computer's sounding like a jet engine to keep the temps where they are right now. Any folks up there to comment whether D0 runs significantly cooler or not?
