Good temps and great cooler. But I think we already knew that about the A64

Prescott 3.4 Socket 478 stepping-D0 Thermaltake Silent Tower heat Pipe. (Not Overclocking)
Idle 36-38C
Load 41-43C

The answer to the C0 vs D0 stepping running cooler.... I think so.

But the heatpipe also took 13C off of my previous cooling solution!!!

Prescott 2.4A
Abit IS7
Zalman CNPS-7000AlCu

Currently overclocked to ~2.8GHz and running 54ºC with very low CPU usage. For a while I was running overclocked to almost 3.3GHz with a bunch of voltage. Had some instability, checked load temperature and was over 85ºC :Q Yeah, yeah, I know that my mobo supposedly reports temps that are too high, but that was supposedly fixed with a BIOS update.

My system was a slightly overclocked 2.6C with my 120mm case fan and the Zalman HSF undervolted. Nice quiet and fast system. I built a system for my GF and decided to give her the 2.6C. I got myself the 2.4A as an "interim" processor to get me by for a while. Well, now I'm having to run the fans at full speed and my system is slower, plus without HyperThreading I can feel those CPU cycles that the bittorrents pull.

3.2@4GHZ YEAH!!!!!!!! (285.8 FSB vdroop/vdimm modded, vcore1.456 ). This thing flys and just keeps on going, everything loads lightning fast.

Love this chip.

The Thermaltake XP-120 MONSTER rules added a good fan also Sunon 120mm!!!!, i literally drooped 5 celcius and at the same time increased the stable overclock to 4Ghz!!

Cheers,

I bet you love that 14x multi with the 1018 BIOS. I wish the D0 had access to it

I also saw that my mobo (Asus P4P800 E) was getting the 14x multiplier in the latest bios update as well. I wasn't planning on OC'ing but i might now

yeha i wwaz reelly pizzed off cuz my $124 PCu ran two hot at almosa 50% clok speed incrse i got riped off and wuld never buiy evil intel cr@p again

LOL, sure I hoped for better, but things are fine the way they are now. I was wanting to get another chip with HT and had gotten one from Fry's (3.2E OEM with disposable motherboard for $189) but the CPU was DOA so I returned it. Now, I'm thinking I'll just have another machine running my bittorrents and ventrilo server. That way, no need to worry about multitasking performance and I don't have to keep my main system powered up 24/7 with the three 7200RPM hard drives and overclocked CPU. I'll have an old Shuttle SV24 with one CPU doing the job. Haven't decided yet which chip to use... Tualatin 1.2 on adaptor or VIA C3 933... more CPU power or lower heat/power draw... In any case I have an XP120 heatsink here plus the parts for the Shuttle box. I think my "problems" are over.

Sounds like your problems are over

Too bad about the 3.2E however - I love mine (especially compared to my previous PIII 500mhz 100mhz fsb)

Yeah, I would have happily kept that CPU, but I tried it on three different boards (with BIOSes that supported the chip) and all three would POST, but then gave errors or locked. My Asus P4P800 Deluxe would POST and then start beeping, and at every beep a line would be printed to the screen to the effect of:

BIOS microcode error 69783
BIOS microcode error 69783
BIOS microcode error 69783
BIOS microcode error 69783
BIOS microcode error 69783
BIOS microcode error 69783
BIOS microcode error 69783
BIOS microcode error 69783

I don't remember the exact wording or number, but it was something like that. This is using newest BIOS and having used that board with a few other Prescotts.

Well, I can't fill in all the numbers yet since I have no OS loaded on this box, but here's what I can tell you from the BIOS so far:

Speed (Ghz): 3.4 (no OC)
Socket: 478
Idle Temp(C): 49 C
Max Temp(C):NA
Mobo Idle Temp(C):33 C
Mobo Max Temp(C):NA
Cooling Solution:Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu
Case: Antec P160
No of Case Fans: 1 x 120MM
Mobo: ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
Monitoring Software:NA
Notes: Enermax Noisetaker 600W has 2 fans, one pulling from inside case as well. Using Artic Silver 5 on the CPU

I can't tell for sure if this is a decent idle temp or not, or should I reseat/repaste my CPU and Cooler?

Well I just got my new P4, pretty cool I think!

I ran two instances of Prime95 on the Large FFT test to use up both logical HT processors. If you look at the task manager with only one instance going, it only uses 50% of the CPU. With two instances going, 100%. I tested for 1/2hr so here's my temps:

Speed (Ghz): 3.2Ghz
Socket: LGA 775
Idle Temp(C): 44
Max Temp(C): 58
Mobo Idle Temp(C): 32
Mobo Max Temp(C): 34
Cooling Solution: Thermaltake CL-P0015 with 14dBa SilenX fan
Case: Cooler Master Centurion
No of Case Fans: 1
Mobo: Asus P5P800
Monitoring Software: MBM 5 and Everest Home Edition

Northwood here. No -- I'm not going to post my temp and OC stats.

I'm just wondering if we have anything even close to even a "small" (Student's T) sample size for comparing idle and load values of LGA775 Prescotts with the socket-478 Prescotts.

And of course, you have all this variation in computer case choices, number of fans, CPU coolers and motherboards.

Anyway, the reviews suggest that LGA775 mitigates some of the thermal problems. You'd want to test that hypothesis. Too easy to believe even reliable review sources, but too expensive to do your own testing and comparison.

BIOS thermal monitoring posts higher temperatures than Win XP would show under hyperthreading. This has a rational explanation, and it is the Win XP temperatures you should heed the most.

Given your case choice, your fan and other features -- I'd say 49C is "OK" for the BIOS monitor, but you need to check it with the OS loaded, booted and running.
