Your idle temp are lower than your case temps. Probably want to check asus for an update to your bios monitoring software.

P4 2.8E Socket 478
Idle: 50-52 C (Goes up from 46 to 50-52 at boot)
Load: 60 C (playing a game)
Mobo Idle: 27-28
Mobo Max: 39 When playing a game
Cooling: Zalman 7000B AlCu (idles at 2100 rpm and at load is at 2600 rpm I dont use Fanmate I use the Q Fan with my motherboard
Vantec 80 mm Stealth Fan in back and some 80 mm fan I found in front
Motherboard: Asus P4P800-E Deluxe
Monitoring Software: Asus PC Probe and AI Booster

I could use some help cooling it down... since some of you are getting 42 C idle...

Pic
Side of case open when pic taken...

Case closed and the temps are 52 for CPU and 37-39 for mobo with Azureus (BitTorrent running). Hardly any CPU usage 0%-5%.

I was having a high idle temp problem with HT enabled and it was solved by doing a "R" reinstall of WinXP and then SP2. I reset the BIOS to Setup Defaults before doing the reinstall. You might turn off HT in the BIOS and check the idle temp. If it goes down, do the "R" reinstall.

Turned off HT in BIOS temps still the same. 54-55 C Idle and Motherboard 41 C after being on for a few hours, 2-4 hours.

If a power supply was getting hot, could it cause these temperatures or would it have to be like really hot?

Hey,
These should help cool it down:
1.Clean the inside case/motherboard/grill fans for any dust.
2.Clean the fans if it's dusty.
3.Reorganize your cable wirings
4.Disable the Q Fan (in BIOS) to enable higher speedfan(If you don't mind the extra RPMs)
5.Make sure the voltages Asus AI Boosters' on the BIOS are set up correctly, by setting them to Auto (or reset the BIOS to its default settings)
6.Clean the HSF (isopropyl alcohol/linen cloth) and reapply with a different thermal paste/use thinner layer
7.Add an additional fan, pci exhaust, etc. towards your outtake flow (or leave a front bay open if you can/don't have any)
8.Turn off your computer first and reassure that the cables are properly fitted by unplugging and replugging the cables from the motherboard.

If you really want to get rid of the high temps...

Instead of working around the problem, and trying to patch the problem, fix the problem at the source. Get rid of the Prescott!

My overclocked, overvolted Winchester @ 100% CPU load (Prime95), is cooler then the average idle Prescott temperatures.

Apply the paste no thicker than 'a sheet of paper'. Use the smooth end of a pocket knife or a Credit Card to help you out. Check HERE for further instructions/clarifications on specific pastes.

Good Luck!

<waves broom>All you AMD people shoo shoo <\waves broom>

This thread is to help people who like hyperthreading and space heaters.
No need to turn up the heat by trying to start a flame war. It's hot enough already

I'm not an AMD person per se. If Intel currently had a better performing CPU (that wasn't an inferno), I would buy Intel. Same thing goes with nVidia Vs ATi. I am not, and never will be a fan boy of any company.

Hyperthreading is Excessive heat is very

I wasn't trying to start a flame war. My point is that it would be much easier, and a lot less work to just get a different board, and CPU.

Intel has a bad design at the moment, so just avoid the hassle. You don't have to stay with a bad CPU design. I'm sure Intel will have a better performing, and cooler CPU in the future, so just get something else in the mean time.

Heck, if you're stuck on Intel, get a desktop Dothan board and CPU. Dothan performance is very good, and makes even an A64 seem "hot" by comparison.

My point is that there are lots of options besides just accepting (and trying to work around) a bad CPU design.

Well if you are rich and have money to use on buying a new board/CPU then sure. But I dont.

If you bought wisely in the first place, you would have saved money, time, have a much cooler system, and been less frustrated in the long run

The thing is that people don't do their research before they buy. It's Intel, so it must be good. When will people learn?

I don't know about the saving money part... how much did u pay for you CPU/board? I didn't wanna buy the 64-bit windows.

I'm not sure how much it was (about $400 I think). I bought a bunch of stuff at once. I bought high end equipment though.

Also, you don't need 64bit Windows to use an A64. In fact, most people will probably never use Win 64 with their current A64 (it's just another available feature/option).

By any account the A64 is a better price/ performance choice then a P4.

But I'm not trying to sound like an AMD only person. I would definitely buy a Intel Dothan system. In fact, that might be my next purchase, for a different computer. A desktop Dothan system wasn't an option when I was upgrading.

Amaroque I understand what your saying but what your saying gets said in EVERY Intel thread. Most folks know this already. I really want to keep this thread on topic to help out those who built Intel based systems. There are reasons to buy Inte,l not everyone games. In my case I put my system together when AMD was transistioning to skt 939 and there weren't that many decent AMD mobos around. Hope you understand

I was just trying to throw out some other options. Two of which are from Intel.

I'm not a big gamer myself, nor was I planning to use Win64 with this CPU. An A64, Northwood, and Dothan are all much better options IMO.

Anyway, sorry for hijacking your thread. Try to stay

Wow, those temps are pretty bad. The only two reasons I could think of are that either you have horrible airflow in your case from either a blockage, or maybe the fan configuration. How many do you have as intake/exhaust?

The other thing you should definitely try is reapplying the heatsink with some good thermal compound. You could be having some bad contact with the processor, and it needs to be re-seated.

That is what I would try first. If that doesn't lower it by at least 10 degrees, then I don't know what else to tell you.
