The Round Rock, Texas, company will replace the flawed motherboards inside nearly 20,000 Inspiron 2650 laptop models manufactured between the middle of November and the middle of December 2002, a company representative said Friday.

The replacement program was introduced by Dell to remedy a bad component that could short out and render the notebook unable to power up, when turned on.

i have a 2650c got it 2 months ago maybe 3 months

According to the cNET article, Dell is "proactively" contacting costumers... but if you're unsure you can always give them a call if you got your laptop around the end of last year.

BTW, the desktop 2650s shouldn't be affected, as they are totally different.

Crap...I got my mom one of these in early December 2002. She's come to depend on it a bit for her business, but I guess it may have to go away for awhile.

Thanks a ton for the heads up though, I don't think we ever would've found out about this if I hadn't have seen your post.

hmm, i just got a refurb one from dell last week... think the people who check the system before putting it back on sell would have replaced or checked up on this flaw? any ideas?

Dell is doing on-site service for those laptops before they break, even if it only has mail-in service. That's what it says in the article.

No you don't. I work for the company doing these replacements. In home or office. You don't need a special place to do it. Although a laptop is different than a desktop, it is still just a piece of electronics.

Yikes. I'd hate to be the guy taking one of those through airport security and have it not boot

Cool I work for one of the companies doing the replacements also. Did they tell you what was wrong with the boards or did they just tell you that it was a 'performance issue'?

That's kinda funny.. because I think I ran into this problem back around the same time they said the defective laptops were manufactured. My aunt bought 5 of these laptops for her business, and 2 of them refuses to power up after a couple of days. Good thing she returned them all.

So, does the recall include the 2650c? Or just the 2650?

Yeah, at the airport, or any security station they can ask you to demonstrate that any piece of electronics works and is just that - piece of consumer electronics and not an explosive or some kind of weapon or its remote control.
