Okay, I have a HP Laser Jet 4 (I know it's old, but it has not given me ANY real problems for the past 10+ years). Just recently, the last inch and a half started paper jamming & comes out warped. Need some technical advice and would appreciate any websites to get inexpensive good replacement parts. THANKS BUNCHES!

Before I go that route in buying a NEW printer, I'd like to think it's just a part that needs replacing. My brother bought a HP Laser Jet 6 (forgot which series) a few years after I bought mine, and what do you know--he was taking his printer in for repair every 6 months or so. Also, I've worked for reputable companies where the newer generation HP Laser Jets suck. Again, looking for gurus who would know which part(s) need replacing, not someone who'll discount the entire printer itself.

I have that printer too, still runs great.

Wonder if your printer cartridge is bad.

You know what? People sell the entire printer on Ebay for $50. The cartridge costs about $100 if you want a genuine HP from Office Depot, that's what I bought. The cheap refurbs go for about $50.

Take it to a laser printer repair service for a quote. Repairing this printer may be a little pricey, but the LJ IV is built like a tank. If it's not too expensive, it'll be better than many printers you can buy for the cost, and is well worth restoring.

I have the same problem I think. I need replacement feed rollers at the rear vertical feed. I have found replacement roller kits on the web with instructions for less than $60.00. I have two working printers 1 laser and one ink jet so I haven't bothered.

Thanks for all the great advice...I knew people on this forums board would come through for me!

I have put this printer through some major printer jobs here at home, not to mention all my moves (including cross-country).

One thing's for sure, HP doesn't build printers like they used to.

THANKS AGAIN!

Dude, if its jamming at the end it might be the fuser aswell. Check the print count on that baby and look up the specs for the fuser. Its pretty normal its jamming in the fuser when it starts to get worn out. Also yoiu might want to try cleaning the feedrollers, they might be slipping and a sensor will time-out.

Though its unlikely if it wrinkles the papers aswell. If it wrinkles I would almost be 100% positive its the fuser, or at least the fuser roll. Try printing 20-30 blank sheets to clean the fuser. Let me know when you've tried that and it still doesnt work.

You need one of 2 things either a roller kit or a new fuser, most likely a roller kit, they do wear out... my father has had one of these for 15+ years now (orginal LJ4) and it still works great, first HP printer w/ 600Dpi and microfine toner, only thing he's done is to put a roller kit in it since he's had it. It's built like a Tank and I expect him to get many more years of service from it.

Well, i though he mentioned that the paper wrinkles. It seems like it should be the fuser then. The least expensive thing he could do first though is to replace the feed rollers yeah. But I find it funny that they would wrinkle the paper whereas the fuser would do if starting to wear out.

First step I would do though is to try to CLEAN the feed rollers first. They just might have becom dirty, if that doesnt help, sure replace them. If THAT doesnt solve it, its almost 100% sure its the fuser or the fuser roller that needs to be replaced.

Do you agree Arcanedeath?

If the paper reaches the output bin but is wavey or wrinkled, then either is an issue with the fuser unit, or a common problem is with the paper output assembly which is Part# RG5-0886 and is about $57. You can buy a repair kit instead of buying the entire assembly which work good but may not be for you if your not good at performing the task which is Part# K0456. You can get a fuser on exchange for $39.00 which is Part# RG5-0454E. If you decide to replace the fuser I would suggest ordering a Maintenance Kit (fuser exchange) instead which should be changed @ 200,000 pages. If you print a self test or config page it will show the page count. The maintenance kit includes pickup rollers for the manual tray, PC tray and the optional LC tray, comes with the fuser (on exchange), transfer roller, manual tray seperation pad. It doensn't come with the output assembly. The output assembly on the HP LJ 4 was engineered wrong by HP. The new replacements are slightly modified.

All the parts are from TSA. Phone number is 1-800-633-6626. These prices may vary slightly but should change much when you order.
