ATTN SBC DSL CUSTOMERS

dirtrat, sleepdragon: Is there any particular name for the deal/package you got from SBC Pacbell? I'm in SoCal/SFV and currently pay 49.95/mo for the basic 385/128/static deal they first offered when DSL came out. (I got a year or so at $39.95, but they raised it last year.) My actual d/l is 1.2mbps, though If I get a new deal at 29.95, can I still use my original Alcatel modem, and do I have to switch to dynamic IP? Can you confirm that the d/l speed won't change -- same wiring, etc.?

I got the same deal as ActionHugh, except I'm a 'new' customer. I've dealt with the shutdown of Telocity, transfer to DirecTVDSL and now SBC/Yahoo.

A friend of mine got a $29.95/month w/1y contract about 4 months ago just by finagling (sp?) it with a rep before the SBC/Yahoo package came out. I tried the same about 2 weeks ago and got it without changing my current phone plan. I constantly asked her a couple of time to make sure I wasn't hearing things and she verified that I was going to get 768/128 for $29.95/month. I think it helped when I told her how sexy her voice was too! (jk)

Either way, $29.95/month for 768/128 in the Chicago area (at least) is available without having to change to a different home plan... well... I did have Callpack 100 which is being discontinued, so a call plan change will have to happen anyway.

Does anyone notice the SpeedStream DSL modem included produces an audible hissing sound or is it just me? I dropped the modem before I could even try it. None of the modems I've had--DSL (DirecTV) or cable (Motorola)--has produced any audible noise.

Mine sometimes whistles show tunes late at night, it's really creepy.

I thought it was my computer making a "new tune", but upon placing my ear closer, I found out it was the SpeedStream modem. I also unplugged it and powered it up a few times and noticed it's a couple seconds before the noise ramps up. Pretty bad since I can notice the noise above my not so up-to-date computer...

i used to get 1.5 max speed.. but last couple weeks, connection is about 500kb .. and pathetic 46kb upload..

btw DONT upgrade to yahoo. I just installs 13 worthless (spyware included) programs on your computer. Only enternet 300 is necissary (if you dont have a router that is).

Note that the "perils in switching to Yahoo" is an amazingly uninformed article. The parts of the Yahoo privacy policy they are referring to has to do with certain financial services that you can sign up for via Yahoo where Yahoo is then legally obligated to provide this information.

I am a computer tech for SBC and it is amazing. All they do is say free upgrade and people install the spyware and all that comes with it without even questioning a thing. When they are done, then a few will ask what good did it do. My answer "Nothing but slow you machine down with worthless software" of course, I cant say that to people over the phone, but that is what I want to say

I upgraded to yahoo sbc and got 760mb of free storage at yahoo briefcase. I consider that an upgrade. You don't have to use the software. I don't use the browser, I just like having the dial up software as backup. I didn't have a dial up number with sbc, now with sbc yahoo I do. I don't know why, but regular sbc dialup has no number here.

Update: I just called and got my payment lowered from 49.99 to 29.99 a month. The lady saidI wasn't eligible at first because I didn't have phone solutions, I said I have seen on the internet where some people have been asked about phone solutions and some have not to be able to get it. This is true, I read the thread at bulging billfold. She said since I saw that she would give it to me without phone solutions. That will save me 240.00 over the next year. Thanks very much for the post.

Is it normal for my 5360 to be making a slight hissing sound when it?s on?

Yes. The hissing noise is a sign that the modem is training. This has no ill effects on the modems performance.

Is "training" the 10 day period when SBC communicates with the modem to set the client's maximum speed? If so, I'm hoping it'll go away when the modem is done "training"?

Has anyone gone from 1.5/128 with a STATIC IP to 1.5/256 successfully keeping the same STATIC IP number?
I hope I can change it and pay 40 bucks a month w/o losing my static...

SBC also has a deal where if you subcribe to DSL and Dish Satellite TV, you get $20/mo off DSL and $5/mo off of Dish for a year. After the first year it's $5/mo off each service.

The only down side is that they seem to charge a lot more on Dish equipment ($50 for extra receiver, $200 for PVR. I think PVR was usually $100 upgrade fee)

ok, i have had dsl for 2 or 3 years so do i just call that number and say i want my upload rate changed to 256 or what? Do i need to make a contract for another year? Currently i am just going month to month since my 1 year contract has been up for awhile. Also, what information do i need to give them? Do i need my billing statement? or can i give them my info like name, address, phone #

You must have gotten a bad rep. I've been with sbc for over 2 years, only the first on contract and they let me get in on it. You have to agree to one year, but your payments go to 29.99.

Great Deal !!! I just called SBC for my Home in Tracy CA .
No Problem $29.99 Month 1 Year Commitment.
They even check ed my line to see if i could get more than 384 d/l
but i am to far.

for Bay Area DSL Subscribers the tel # to contact SBC is
1800-609-7030 Option 1, and then 1 again.

I just saved $240.00 this year.
