If you're an SBC customer, then there is a deal going on right now. After you agree to a one year contract, you have two options: you can

A. Have your monthly fees lowered by $10, or

B. You can get 256mb of upload bandwidth (provided your close enough to the central office) and pay the same monthly rate.

I opted for choice B since I'm on fiberoptic direct to central office (Remote Terminal) and I connect at the full data rate. I get 1180/245 connection. Lowered all my pings by around 10ms.

In order to sign up for this deal, you need to call 1(888) 792-3751 Option 1, 1 and ask them about signing up for a 1 year service plan.

Here is a summary from the DSLR forums

A) existing sbc phone customer w/minimal services
384-1.5/128 mo-mo is $49/mo 1yr term is $39/mo
768-1.5/256 mo-mo is $59/mo 1yr term is $49
B) existing sbc phone customer w/"phone solutions" or "SBC total connections"
384-1.5/128 1yr term $29/mo
768-1.5/256 1yr term $39/mo

Oh yeah, btw, first post.

There's a huge thread on the subject over there too... (FW link. Mods? cool?) A link to the DSLReports forum as well...

I'm "technically" bay-area, and I got it to work

SBC has a package right now called Total Connections where you get a discount for your DSL, telephone and a 10% discount with your Cingular plan, and it all comes in one easy bill .

it appears you have to "upgrade" your dsl if your a current user to yahoo dsl.
and yahoo dsl is completely evil. if you use their software its total spyware.
and even if you dont they log everywhere you go and sell the information.
not very cool.

if you dont mind all that, its a smoking hot deal.
Perils in switching to Yahoo

i have been getting a bunch of letters in the mail from SBC saying please upgrade to yahoo dsl. its free
and can do all this , and that. Im staying as far as way as yahoo as i can.

This number is for Southwestern Bell SBC DSL. Not too much of a deal for those of us on SBC DSL with Ameritech.

I did the upgrade about a month ago. They modified some of my Outlook settings, but I don't notice anything else different. I connect through a router though so I don't use their software.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try later.

I have a program called Pest Patrol that is supposed to be able to flush out spyware. What (if anything) do you think it would find after running a scan on SBC/Yahoo DSL-enabled 'puter?

I had SBC DSL in San Antonio and it stunk because the wiring is so bad in my house. Good deal but I'll pass.

I'll answer as much as I know about.

This plan is specifically if you were under the Southwestern Bell umbrella. I have no idea if it works under the entire SBC conglomerate. Call your bell's EPC (the new customer signup #) to find out.

What this plan does is it lowers your payment by $10. The deluxe package is normally $59.95, and the standard is normally $49.95. Under this 1 year contract, you get $10 off both packages. After the year, the price should go back to normal. If you have the deluxe package already, sign up for the year to lower your monthly payments.

If you have the total connections package, your prices drop by $20 so 256meg u/l is now $39.95 and standard is $29.95

Wow, they offered me the a similar deal as option 1 but $20 off instead of $10, and no extra anything. Same everything.

About 1 and half month ago I signed up for 1 year contract for $39.99 a month for the plus package. Am I able to lower my rate to $29.99 even with this contract. Anyone in my situation try this?

JoeFoster, and others with questions, go check out the FW thread link that I posted above...Most of those questions have been already asked and answered since that thread has been going for over a month now.

To more specifically answer your question though...It seems that once you're already in a contract, you're stuck. Nobody's reported being able to renegotiate a lower contract after being locked in.

Good post.
Might want to add "DSL" somewhere in the title, so people will know this is about DSL instead of a phone deal

anyone got this to work in bay area?

You must have missed some of the older post here. I got in on the $29.99/Month deal with them just a few weeks ago. Same speed as what I was paying $49.99/Month for and I got a new DSL Modem package out of it too.

Just a note that I got in on the $29.99/mo deal with SBC/Ameritech in SW Michigan about um....4 months ago or so. They switched me back to $50/mo a couple times and I had to call and yell at them. They gave me a credit each time for the difference but at this point I never know from month to month whether it will cost me another 1/2 hr phone call to get back to $30/mo or not until I get my bill. But it was simple, no changes to make, just called, asked, they said ok, done. 768/128/dynamic.

Edit: At the time I was about 4 months into my one year contract.

I called SBC Pacific Bell about 1 month ago and got transferred quite a few times b/c the rep I talked to
either didn't know anything about this promotion for existing customer, or said I have to cancel and sign
up again, or said I need to have some kind of package services in order to get the $10 off my monthly fee.

I was able to get a hold of a rep who actually know the promotion and by agree to stay on for another yr,
he lowered my monthly rate to $29.95, but he didn't mention the other option which is to increase upload
to 256..I would love to pay $39.95 and get 256kbps upload through..

Anyway, this promotion only apply to those who are on month to month contract, and if you are still on your
original 1 yr contract, don't think you can get it w/o they hit you with the cancelation charge.
