I hope I can change it and pay 40 bucks a month w/o losing my static...

Please reply or send me a pm please.

I am in Los Angeles, CA btw...

I'm in LA too, and I just got off the phone with SBC/PacBell/Yahoo DSL, whatever they're called now. I have a static IP and I got the $29.95 rate for 12 months plus a new free modem. However, I believe that this was really a retention plan type of deal as I've been an Pacbell DSL subscriber for 3 years now, paying $50/month (ack, I've given $1,800 to pachell just for dsl!).

Anyway, I could have gone to 256k up for $40/month but I don't qualify for the faster speed so I get to stay at 128k upload and pay $30/month. (DSLReports.com estimates I'm 11k ft from the CO so I'm not surprised).

Big caveat though... neither I, nor the retention guy mentioned anything about me currently having a static IP address. So I'm taking a gamble. It seemed to me from what he was saying that all he was going to change was my billing, but we'll see. If I lose my static IP and go dynamic it's not really a big deal to me anyway. I just have a static IP because that was all they had when I first signed up. I'll post again though if they do switch me to dynamic.

BTW, I asked twice if this was just a change to my billing and would not affect my service and she verified.

Yes. The hissing noise is a sign that the modem is training. This has no ill effects on the modems performance.

Is "training" the 10 day period when SBC communicates with the modem to set the client's maximum speed? If so, I'm hoping it'll go away when the modem is done "training"?

If you go here and type in '5360' and 'hissing' you will se a couple of articles on it. sorry but they redirect the link

no, the 10 day period is when they optimize your line. They send you a weaker faster signal and if the modem stays in sync they leave it there or try upping it again. Once the signal gets too weak and is going out of sync, then that is the fastest that your line can handle and they cap it there. The Hissing is just the modem, when you first turn it on. Once the modem is first turned on then the modem is "training" meaning it is checking the line and making sure it recieves the signal, and on some it contiues to hiss. This really is nothing to worry about though.

you can go to yahoo and sign up for as many free briefcase's that you want to. They are included with your free email accounts. I have signed up for 3 but only use one. I dont know many people that would store information on line. It is not that secure, yahoo is one of the easiest for hackers to hack. I only put things in the breifcase that I wouldnt mind others seeing, or I use it as a very temporary online folder to store all my settings when I reformat a computer for a freind and they dont have a second computer on a network (and if the dont have a cd burner).

Oh and I did forget to mention, you do have a dial up with both, they use the exact same numbers and servers, routers, etc...

Yes, and it's a pain in the butt. Getting 750mb in one account is pretty significant. I don't care how many people hack into or look at my digital pictures. That's the idea, online storage so I can tell friends and family members to look at it. It works out great for me. I want them to be able to look at them in one place, not have to go to 10 different accounts.

I also know a lot of people that share files from these, 750mb in one place is much easier than breaking them down over different accounts.

You rock buddy! You just saved me $10 per month. It took me all of five minutes to get my rate changed!

I believe you can still have a email/web server off of a dynamic ip. Check out www.zoneedit.com, for example.

It really must be the luck of the draw with whatever customer service rep you get, but:

My gal said the $30/mo promo ended 1/31. She said she'd be happy to extend the current promotion to me, which is for $35/mo, to which I agreed. She also sent out a new modem kit for a $12 shipping charge.

I'm reasonably happy- wish I got in on the $30 promo but $35 isn't too bad, and my DSL has always been rock solid 1.5 down, 128 up.

$34.95/mo with $50 activation fee isn't much different than $39.95/month with no activation fee. Still, if it's available for existing customers without activation fee...

Does anyone know if the new offer for $34.99 / month is for 1.5kbps/128kbps(given that you're close enough)?

This is kind of OT.

But do you really have to install all that software on your pc? I just want plain connection and no SBC Yahoo! software in it.

Do I just install the Enternet software?

Thanks.

You do not need to install the software. I do not use it, nor does my coworker who just got DSL this month. We both connected using routers with PPPoE cabability though for your info.
