Yes. It bolts directly to the turbo and then to the mid pipe, which connects to the catback system.

Upgraded intercooler costs anywhere between $250 and $900 depending on brand name and design. The most efficient for the money are in the $400-600 range new or less used.

Easy to swap in? Eh, if you think taking off the front bumper is easy. Most people who do it themselves claim 3-4 hours for completion.

Front bumpers are cake to remove in most cars. About 10-15 bolts.

I know I saw some postings on a3 forums about people going with the s3 coolers.

Sound like intercooler is the way to go. Down pipe is going to require a lot more work getting the exhaust out.

Just picked up a gently used downpipe. The biggest stock part holding back performance is the downpipe for my car. New high flow pipe with 200cell cat ready to go on! Once I do that I'll be flashing to Stage 2 software.

Can't wait!

Next up is an intercooler. I'm already heat soaking at my current power levels and its not even into the hottest part of summer.

How do you know you are heat-soaking?

Do you think you're heat-soaking when the car is moving?

The stock IC is not enough for Florida heat and humidity. I have not personally done the tests and logs to prove it but there are plenty of people around the MK6 forums who have.

Stock vs a popular aftermarket unit.

All I know for sure is that on my daily driving, after a few minutes idle or in some light traffic, my car feels like a bloated pig and doesn't calm back down for some time. I don't think its absolutely necessary but with Stage 1 or 2 power levels and Florida summers I know it would be hugely beneficial.

Not really. It is 3 bolts off the bottom of the car and 1 from the top.

Here is the view from the bottom of a MKV. Looks similar to the MKVI. It really is easy to do, especially when you have a group of friends who have done it multiple times.

Good questions to ask, if you are not measuring the temperature of both the intake pre and post IC it's going to be hard to determine. Not sure of VWs but on my cars I can use my Scangauge to pickup the post IC temperatures, so I can make a judgement call based on ambient to determine if I am heatsoaking. The only time I ever see an issue is when I am stuck on the freeway in traffic.

From the logging I've seen at Mk6 from people in the same area of the country and climate from me, they are seeing a 10 degree drop from idle air temps vs what they got on stock. They also experience no lag, surging, delay, etc.

FMIC isn't a bad install. I've not replaced the stock so I don't know if that's more involved. I have the Forge Twintercooler, it runs inline with the stock IC. One of the places I shop at was going out of business so I got it for about 300 off.

Biggest PITA for me was getting the hoses trimmed right. Since they are Y's that connect both intercoolers it took a lot of test fitting to get it right. Also remounting the bumper by myself sucked, you had to get it lined up perfectly or the sliding clips wouldn't hook right. Would have been way easier with 2 people.

Remove bumper and front splash shields:

Back together (minus grill):

I've done a full APR exhaust on it by myself too. Hardest part on the downpipe was 1 bolt was really hard to get to. I think I ended up assembling a crazy mix of extensions and got it from underneath.

You probably are heat soaking in stopped/slow traffic. Every IC will. A bigger IC will (at best) only delay the inevitable in that case.

I installed a bigger IC not because of heat soaking, but because the larger core freed up intake flow enough to bump me up 1-2psi at the throttle body under boost. It is a good upgrade for sure, but if you're moving at all you'd have a hell of a time heat soaking any intercooler.

Quick update - Got a new down pipe a few months back. Finally got around to installing it a few weeks ago and then after a week I went Stage 2. Oh my god, so much better. It feels like it is pulling much harder now, the torque difference is noticeable immediately. You feel acceleration all the way up until you change gears.

Now the sad part, my front tyres are dying quickly. Partially because of the insane amount of miles I drive every year and partly because I've been enjoying my new found torques. They also do not grip at all and because they are pirelli's I'm afraid to go near kerbs because they could explode at any moment.

What is the recommended brand of tyres for FWD hot hatches? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. I also prefer to go extreme summer vs all season. Though, spontaneous Florida showers may be an issue...hmm. Thoughts?

Didn't someone get some Dunlop Direzza Z2's recently and said they were pretty amazing? I think that's what I'm going to shoot for when it comes time to change. Oddly they're cheaper than the stock ones and much better.

Ventus V12 Evos are pretty good, not horribly expensive, and have a decent warranty. I like them on my MR2, and a lot of MS3 guys like them as well.

I've got 225/45-18 Bridgestone Potenza RE050As on my MS3, but only because I got a set used for $200, I did not (and would not) pay $220/each that they are new. Though they do grip amazingly well their tread life is very short.

Given your high mileage requirement (apparently, can you put a number on it?) I would suggest not going below a UTQG treadware of 200, and maybe not even less than 300.

I have v12 Evos on the 911, decent for spirited driving, though a bit greasy at the limit. Much quieter than the Star Specs I had on the M3... compromise I guess.

Yeah, they're great street tires, but not great track tires.

Speaking of tires like that, consider the Yokohama S.Drive, very comparable to the V12, but a little nicer IMO.

I couldn't get V12's in my size so i went with Kumho LE sports when they first came out. Not bad of a tire, i like them but i dont have much to compare by. Its my first set of summer only.

Just went through the same thing V12 vs Bridgestone Pole Position SO-4 vs PS2 Sport.

Went with the Bridgestones - couldn't be happier. I heard the V12's were loud + wore down easily so I went with the higher treadwear rating.

I've had S.Drives before and loved them but was on a lower powered vehicle. I know JLee's a big fan of the Star Specs and the ZII's are the new improved version of them.

Ask JLee what he put on his CTS-V...

My commute is just over 50 miles a day round trip so my miles add up quickly, which is depressing but whatever.

I've heard good things about the V12s before but are they really loud? I've driven cars with loud tyres before (mainly trucks and jeeps) and could never own a set like that for myself. I have no idea what "loud" would be for a car.

I'm also not concerned about track performance. I'm one good craigslist deal away from a Miata and a flyin miata shopping spree, so I have no interest in tracking my GTI. Too many upgrades needed to make it truly worth it.

I had similar concerns, I found the Pole Positions had the highest wear ratings when I was looking.

I use S.Drives on my Miata and they are super quiet. The V12s on the MR2 are also reasonably quiet (IMO). All else being equal, I like the S.Drives better than the V12s.

However, Hankook was offering an $80 rebate, and DiscoutTireDirect was doubling that rebate and offering free shipping. That made the decision easy for me. Keep an eye out for deals like that.

Any summer tire isn't going to wear as well as an all-season with a higher treadwear rating. You will pay a little bit more to have tires that are nice to drive on, you need to decide if that's worth it to you.

Edit: hells yes buy a Miata.

I somehow JUST found this thread, I am also a GTI driver/enthusiast! I was one of the Forza 4 articles last year, (http://forzamotorsport.net/en-US/news/HMA_11_29_12)

I've just done a few upgrades since the article but the car is nothing like it was stock - absolutely love the thing.

I'm sure you use it, but the www.Golfmk6.com forums is a great resource for what people done/have done etc.

I have yet to venture into the tire debate/research...

Lol atty I remember we bought gtis at about the same time. Have you been stage 1 for 8 months? I'm just stock with an upgraded rsb and alk. The v12s are nice, I have a set.

Have you had any problems with stage 1?

I liked the silver wheels.

I just switched to Bridgestone RE760 Sports from the S-04 Pole Position. I felt like I burned through the S-04 in months. My commute is 40 miles each way. We'll see how these last, but I like the look a lot.
