Well, I thought I would start a thread about all the little things I will be doing to my GTI.

List starts as such:
Carbonio ram air/CAI intake
Lowering springs (Front and Rear)
ECU Flash
High flow down-pipe
Summer tires (stock all seasons suck!)
Intercooler upgrade (even at stock power levels the OEM intercooler isn't powerful enough for where I live)

Today I will be doing my new intake system from APR/Carbonio

Got the intake installed tonight, it was a pain. Stupid screws in stupid places and a clamp on the OEM MAF tubing that was made of metal and wider than anything I've ever seen before. That took a good 20 minutes to get moved into place. Oh well, works beautifully!

After:

Carbon fiber goodness!

Carbonio is stupid expensive for what you get (imo)

<- guy that's spent north of grand on intake before.

Carbonio. Ok, maybe I'm immature, but I can't read that without using my Beavis voice.

I take it you got tuned by APR too, since you bought their overpriced intake? Did you buy their intercooler and downpipe too?

I didn't buy it, it was a gift. I will probably get their tune but I won't buy their intercooler or downpipe.

As far as intercoolers go, I might get the S3 but I'm worried it won't be big enough. I might go with the SPM but that is sometime down the line.

As for downpipes, the AWE is the one I like the most, but its the most expensive. I might get the inexpensive ones (eurojet, SPM, UR, Billyboat, etc) but I won't have to worry about that until I decide to, if I decide to, go Stage 2.

Afaik, they got it for around $200. Same price as any other intake and from independent tests and reviews this is the best "all around" intake.

Looks good. Atleast you can keep the engine cover on there, on the previous engine (FSI) you have to remove the entire cover because it IS the OEM intake

I'm almost missing the simplicity of my old '99 Camry's engine bay. There are so many wires, hoses, clamps, odd shaped fasteners, and crazy other things that I have no clue on their purpose. I can only assume its all becauseracecar...or turbo/intercooler/direct injection witchcraft since those are the things my old engine lacked lol.

It all kind of excites me, a whole new world of parts and maintenance to learn. Sadly, I have another 31,000 (really, 95,000) miles to go before I have to worry about doing any of it myself. I can only hope the engine stays as clean as it is now when I have to start doing my own work on the car.

If you're poking around in the engine bay right now I would suggest preemptively squirting some oil or antiseize on anything you take out or anything that looks like it might start to corrode a bit.

Looking forward to seeing what mods you go with.

I would look into a LSD too. I hate torque-steer...of course my R does not have that problem.

If I was going K04 I would invest in that. I don't plan to do go k04 though. Honestly, this car was bought out of necessity. I needed a car and this was something I liked. When I start craving for massive amounts of power and capability I will buy a new car.

Nice car.

I've owned a MK1 GTI and MK2 GLI.

I didn't seem to have the trouble with VWs that others have.

I did find a good independent VW mechanic for when the repairs were beyond my abilities or available time.

Went Stage 1 yesterday.

Went with an APR Stage 1 as they have a great customer service record and seem to be the favorite among my area. Had a local VW/Audi/Porsche dealer do the flash for me.

Numbers went from 210hp/220tq (dyno results from multiple pulls of different GTIs) to 260hp/305tq (same, dyno'd average).

Feel in power? Great. Instead of the power all being near the middle and top of the RPMs and really only lasting for a short period before the "go" stopped, it now exists all the way throughout. Its extremely manageable, it feels like its still stock in its delivery. My favorite part is that it was on sale and I got a fully loaded ECU. I have the ability to switch from Stage 1 93 map to stock if I want. I also have a 100 octane map if I ever decide to spend $8 a gallon at one of the gas stations that sell it nearby and a valet mode I'll probably never use.

All in all I'm happy. Now I'll be looking into a good daily driver mount set up and looking into some suspension work. Both of which are probably 6 months out though.

Pics of whole car? Or just stock black Mk6?

Also, is the Stage 1 flash really worth it? Everyone online says it is, but I can't tell if it's because racecar or because it really is that much better. Been thinking of getting it for my Mk5 Wolfsburg Jetta with the TSI.

it's the best money you can spend for quick HP if you have the DSG. I have a manual '12 and the only reason I haven't done it yet is because from most accounts the clutch won't last very long afterwards and I don't want to drop the money on a new clutch too just yet. Plan to just do both at the same time.

Maybe I'll hold off then since I have the 6MT. I spin the tires too much in 1st anyways.

Yes. You have power everywhere now. Acceleration is effortless. The whole car feels "smoother" now, that is the best way to describe it. Instead of a "sweet spot" in the power band you've not got it throughout the entire thing.

It isn't just because racecar, it really does make a huge difference. It doesn't give our cars/engine the ability to throw you against your seat or ruin your face, it just gives them a really balanced power band and throttle response.

These or;

These? The second ones are 19's (I think the first are 18's) but I will be keeping my 18'' wheel size that I have now.

My reasons for getting them are so I get a slightly wider tire (without any fitment issues) and I've never been a fan of the stock wheels. They are also as heavy as they come.

Thoughts?

E: Yes, same wheel, different color. Can't decide.
