Is that true? I have MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum and I'm thinking of getting a Z550 ... will I be wasting my money getting this?
Z-5500s will take optical or coax from anything. The ZS and all other non SoundStorm cards will only provide 5.1 from anything other than a pre-encoded source that is outputted bit for bit (a DVD, an AC3 track of any kind) from the little analog minijacks, if you were to use digital optical or coax you'd have to use prologic.Originally posted by: NeuroSynapsis

Possibly...
AFAIk (I haven't set mine up yet) the 5500's will only accept a digital OPTICAL connection from a dvd player, but will take a digital COAX connection from a sound card. There aren't too many cards with digital coax out. so if you're playing movies from your computer you're bound by the 5.1 decoding of the sound card
