I'm planning to buy a new TV (Samsung LNT5687) for my semi-home theater system, but I have no clue on regarding what speaker system I should buy.

Due to my budget, I can't go all out and buy speakers separately so I thought of three options:
1. Buy Home Theater In A Box kit.
2. Buy a receiver (Pioneer VSX-917V-K) and hook up my computer speakers (Creative Gigaworks 7.1 S750) to it.
3. Buy Logitech Z-5500.

Preferably I'd like to go with the option #2, but I'm not sure if it's possible to do it. Any suggestion?

What kind of budget are you looking at? Onkyo makes nice Home Theater in a Box sets.

Check shoponkyo. Create an account to see the lowest prices on refurb HTiBs. Can prolly get something for half the stated cost with exponentially better results than said options.

700 will definitely get you a HTIB that will beat those other choices. 500 probably would, too, especially if you shop online.

You could do option #2 (use your current speakers and get a receiver) but you'd need to get a receiver with pre-outs and even then it would be a bit tricky.

Did you take a look at my sticky thread at all? It has information on giving yourself an upgrade path if that interests you.

Otherwise a HTIB set or you do in fact have enough money to consider buying speakers and sub separately.

So did you decide against the upgrade path option?

(for example using your current budget for a nice 2.1 system for now and adding to it later?)

do not get HTIB and do not buy any computer speakers

this is what you need: a good receiver which will have plenty of inputs and output that you desire, the pioneer you have looked at is a very good unit, i have the pioneer VSX - 1015TX its an older bigger model with a 5.0 JBL Northridge E System i compiled myself...speakers are what make the biggest difference,, i would look for used JBL e50 speakers or basically anything in the Northridge line can me mixed and matched

on your budget, buying anything new like HTIB or stupid computer speakers is a waste of your money, either increase the budget (yeah right hehe) or look locally on your craigslist and get some older speakers that will rock your house

I can agree with this, particularly regarding the speakers. There have been no real improvements in speaker SOUND quality in the last 20 years.
Different styles have become popular, such as main speakers with built-in powered subs...but actual SOUND quality hasn't changed much, if at all.

So you can actually get a much nicer system for the money if you go with a higher-quality, used set of speakers.

The real advancements have been in the receivers, and even then it's just about the gadgets.....the latest surround sound encodings, connections (HDMI, component), and just more bells and whistles in general.
But as far as sound quality/clarity....again, despite manufacturers' claims to the contrary, no real advancements in receivers, either.
A good receiver from 10 years ago, that's still in good working order, will sound as good that manufacturer's current equivalent receiver today....it just won't have all the latest and greatest stuff that I mentioned before.

In general, your system is only as good as its weakest/cheapest component. Personally, my advice has always been to get really good speakers first, get the receiver to get you by for now, until you can get one that's up to par with your speakers. Your speakers will never be obsolete, but your receiver will. This didn't use to be the case, but since the advent of surround sound, it unfortunately is now.
There'll always be the next "Dolby Super-Duper Pro Logic Force-Enhanced" surround encoding, and that'll me that there will be new receivers with that feature....but they'll be powering the same speakers for the most part.

So while a good HTIB will smoke any set of computer speakers, the whole system will be a compromise.....and a well-thought-out system with a nicer set of used speakers, with maybe a lesser-expensive receiver would very likely be a superior system.

Just depends on how picky you are about it.

PERSONALLY, I would take the SR605 option, and some Polk R50s.
I'm with you, but the R50s are out of stock at Fry's.

TX-SR605S $389
POLK AUDIO R1502 pair for $100
POLK AUDIO CSR $80
Dayton SUB-100 10"$132

That's $701 plus shipping, for a system you should be quite happy with.

DAMMIT, I knew someone was going to say that. That is exactly what I was going to do. Get SR605, 2 R50s, 1 CSR and then some Radio Shack Presidian speakers for 15 dollars for 2 of them, of course I will be watching 7.1 material. The R150s ARE great though, I have them for my computer 2.0 setup. They sound great, I could only imagine them as surround speakers, or even a good powered 2.0 or 2.1 system.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I live in Canada so my option is bit limited.

I'm actually leaning towards to get a 2.1 system and slowly upgrade my way up. Another option I'm thinking is getting Onkyo HT-SR800 which I can pick one up for around $500~ locally.

That is what I am doing. For those of us on a budget, going this route is the best way IMO. I also am for getting better speakers and lowering your receiver for now. Later buy a better receiver.

Also have you checked www.audiogon.com? I have seen some great deals, 1/2 off speakers quite often (paradigm atom/mini's for high $200's, Focal 706's for low $300).

You should also check out http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/. Going with used gear is a great option that most people don't want to consider. I've gotten some great stuff over the years buying used.

One other thing: don't bother with more than 5.1 speakers, unless you've got some very specific source material that's in 6.1 or 7.1. Most HD discs, for example, don't feature anything more than 5.1 tracks, even when using TrueHD or DTS-HD MA. I can see some reason to buy a 7.1 receiver (as in, most of the decent ones are 7.1 these days), but I wouldn't bother with more than 5 speakers and a sub for now.

Look for that on shoponkyo, if not buy at CC.

QFT. I just picked mine up for 299 refurbed at ecost. Link

This system is overkill for my, relatively, small living room. All speakers have wall mount holes in the back so mounting them on my wall was easy too.

I have had the same receiver from my Onkyo HTIB 7.1 since ~2005 and have had no trouble. However the sub did have some rattle physically inside, or it could have been the driver its self, but it would disappear when I would hold the sub woofer so it wouldn't touch the floor. Something shaking on the plate amp I believe.
