Audio issues with new build

This is my first build with an ABIT IP35 Pro. Its so fast and worked right out of the box. I had no issues at all, posted the first time. I have 2G of memory installed, a 500 watt ps, and an E6600 Intel processor. This setup is fast!

I have Klipsch 5.1 speakers. I've used them for a few years with my other computer and they work great. But when I play audio from my new computer - be it Itunes playing my mp3 collection, YahooMusic with streaming audio, or even Windows media when I play a video - it stutters, then shrieks - sometimes right away and sometimes after a few songs. When it does play, it sounds great.

This happens whether I am using onboard 7.1 sound or my pci sound card.

I have checked all the settings in the software. I have removed a nearby pci card. I have tried the card in another slot. I've adjusted the hardware acceleration, I've checked all of the connections to the pc and the speakers. I've checked for hardare conflicts. Nothing makes any difference.

The only thing I haven't done is flash the bios. There is a new version out in July, but I have never done it before. ABIT support so far is useless. I have sent three emails so far with no reply. The directions for flashing the bios were written by someone who doesn't speak English very well and make no sense to me in couple of places. I formatted a DOS-bootable floppy, but when I tried to add the bios files, they don't fit!

I know this is long winded, but I've tried everything I can think of and have hit a wall. I don't want to send my motherboard back, do you think I need to? Do you think updating the bios might help?

TIA

Have you tried previous drivers for the sound card you are using? (Onboard and the PCI card).

What may help is, disabling one of the two audio devices. Use only the onboard, OR only the PCI card. Does the problem continue?

Does the problem continue with either of the devices when using older drivers?

I'd hold off on flashing the BIOS.

Also, have you tried updated drivers? Does not sound like drivers since it happens with on board and pci but it's worth a try I guess.

Might want to try 1 ram stick at a time and see if that changes anything, also run memtest86 on it to see if there are any issues there.

Other then that I would figure it's most likely a bad windows install or possibly a motherboard issue.

it's a stretch, but replace your codecs it's possible all of those could be playback from a bad mpeglayer3 codec. next I'd reinstall windows

Okay, I tried memtest and there are no issues. All the drivers are updated. There are no older drivers as the card and the board are pretty new. I disabled the onboard when I used the sound card. Codecs - I made sure I have all the most recent ones in updates for itunes and media player, for example. No change.

Here's an idea - The motherboard comes overclocked from the factory. The cpu is 2.4Mhz and shows as overclocked to 2.66Mhz in the BIOS. Do you think that could affect the sound?

Thanks - you all have been so helpful - hope I keep learning enough to help someone else on these boards someday!

I built this system in a college PC Hardware class. My instructor told us that we did not need to connect a cable from the motherboard to the sound card or cd player on new systems. However, the following is from the manual:

"This connector connects to the audio output of internal CD-ROM Drive or add-on card."

It shows a pic of a four pin connector labelled LGGR. I assume that is Left, Ground, Ground, Right.

Am I right? Should I try connecting it?

your instructor is correct, i haven't installed that wire in years and it's for analogue input from the cd-drive for example.
if you're still weary of updating the bios you should re-install windows. i have no other suggestions
