Audiophiles: MP3 Ripping..

What is the best way to get the absolute highest quality MP3s? IE. Codec, Codec settings, Ripping Program..

Im thinking something along the lines of LAME. What kind of switches do I need to optimize it? Which ripping program should I use?

EAC for ripping

LAME for Encoding. I use "--dm-preset xtreme" It makes a pretty big VBR file, but damn does it sound good

Cool. I'll try that some time.

I just use WMA 8.0, but then I don't consider myself an audiophile.

I've been using WMA 8.0, but I dont like giving Microsoft so much control over me. Not to mention the quality isnt as good as a well optimized MP3.. Also the Windows Media Player uses alot more resources then Winamp..

I don't know where I got it, but I have the older Fraunhofer (FhG) Professional Codec for Windows ACM. No, its not the Radium hacked one. I have that, too. Its the bona fide FhG Professional Codec which the Radium version is based on. I use AudioGrabber as the front-end, it allows you to choose which ACM codec you want to use. The encoder is slow as hell but it produces excellect quality MP3's.
