good decision Chris

hopefully this means a Rage reunion beyond Coachella, but unfortunately it doesn't sound like Soundgarden will return.

from MTV.com:

In a statement to the press announcing the imminent release of his sophomore solo album, Carry On, on Thursday (February 15) Chris Cornell confirmed months of rumors by announcing that he has left Audioslave.

"Due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences, I am permanently leaving the band Audioslave," he said in a statement. "I wish the other three members" ? guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk ? "nothing but the best in all of their future endeavors."

That was the extent of Cornell's statement regarding his departure. But this afternoon, when MTV News spoke with Cornell about his decision to leave Audioslave, he said he had been thinking about leaving since the band finished recording its last effort, Revelations...

...And when asked about Soundgarden possibly reuniting, Cornell said it was doubtful. "I haven't received any phone calls from anyone in Soundgarden about a reunion since we broke up, nor have I called anyone," he said. "We were happy with how it ended. There was no unfinished business. Soundgarden wasn't a band where we broke up and everyone was like, 'I'm never f---ing talking to you again.' It wasn't like that. We've all talked to each other many times since then. Its something we don't feel we need to do."

Good, I'm sick of hearing them. Though, I REALLY hope Rage doesn't get back together. If they do, please god make something that doesn't sound exactly the same as everything else.

Fsck.. damnit. Audioslave was much better than Rage. I'm going to see if this solo album is any good at least.

I've liked every band Cornell had been in. Temple of the Dog (with the Pearl Jam dudes), Soundgarden (interestingly Matt Cameron went on to drum for Pearl Jam) and Audioslave (the music of RATM without the labor laws and political aggression was a refreshing change). His solo songs were good too ('Seasons' is hauntingly amazing). With a voice like that, it would be a crime for him to not give us something great all over again.

'Audioslave' and 'Out of Exile' were good albums. Haven't heard 'Revelations' but I liked the song they used in Miami Vice, 'Shape of Things to Come'.

Cheers,
Aquaman

Audioslave died after their first album. That will always go down as one of my favorites!

Chris needs to go solo or get back w/ Soundgarden (highly doubtful).

Are you kidding me? Rage was much, MUCH beter then Audioslave. Morello actually gave a ****** when he was in Rage. And when Morello gave a ******, that's what made the band come together as a whole.

Audioslave sadly hit the too radio friendly note. I hate it when my favorite bands go that route... yet I can never blame them.

I thought Morello was great in Audioslave. What I didn't like about Rage was the lead singer yelling at me to be a communist. He is a subpar rapper and is not near the level of the rest of the band, where Cornell actually brought something to the table.

Exactly, I hated the lead singer of Rage, he was just a whiney little b!tch.

Most Guns N' Roses fans worship Slash-Stradlin and don't really care about Axl.
Similarly, RATM was all about Morello and not Zach De La Rocha - or so I've heard.

RATM was original, you have to give them credit for that. I personally prefer the Audioslave sound but RATM has some balls-to-the-wall tracks that are quite unlike any of the other countless bands they inspired. Every local band I see out here is either a Metallica-wannabe or a RATM-wannabe (and of course, there are the bands that started playing 2 months ago and think they can cover Dream Theater). So they were definitely influential, original and a class act.

Audioslave was great until their last album. "Revelations" sounded nothing like the Audioslave I've come to know and enjoy.

Saying that, I doubt this is the end of Chris Cornell.

Agreed. They got progressively worse. The second one was ok, and the last one I heard the 2 singles on the radio and was like WTF is this?

compare his work on temple of the dog, louder than love, badmotorfinger, and superunknown to audioslave. the former cornell had passion and range, the later has a tired and gravely voice.

You have a point there. For instance, his voice resonates through the room on 'Hunger Strike' & 'Seasons' in a way it hasn't in a while (see 'Shape of Things to Come'). But I still like his voice - maybe not as much as Ed Vedder's though.

Ditto, loved their first album, and I still listen to it some times, but nothing really good after that. And I can get around RATM's sometimes anti-capitalistic lyrics and still enjoy the songs. The battle of Los angeles is one of my fav albums.
