thanks! been looking for a good and cheap sound card since I stupidly put in the mobo without removing the metal pieces that are blocking the sound input/output...and also too lazy too remove mobo!

I have this sound card. I would recommend it for Win98SE and earlier, but the XP drivers are not acceptable (no surround output, no digital output) and there are huge headaches getting the card to work on the KT133(A) chipsets. Be warned.

yeah, i have aureal vortex2 card and abit kt133 and for some reason it has the annoying crackling sound usually during loading and i've tried newest drivers but it dont work. but the crackling sound usually goes away after the puter's been on a while and playing any mp3 easily out does the sound.

that's one of the reasons i'm not upgrading to xp, cuz the sound might be incompatible, not to mention my voodoo 5500...

Do the win2K fix for vortex cards on XP andit will work fine. Above mentioned features lacking, of course, but no problems working in a normal manner.

The Aureal SQ2500 works fantastic in XP with defaul drivers.

audscott ive heard more than once that there is no quad sound in xp with the windows driver so im guessing you have your speakers set to emulate quad sound?
Ive also heard that the 2000 drivers on vortex of sound are buggy and sound comes and goes depending on the application running.For those running xp has that been your experience with the aureal chip?

Has anyone gotten the optical out working in 2000/xp? I REALLY want a cheap card just for recording to mds and this looks like it. But I'd rather not install 98....

I used to have (a few days ago) an Aureal Vortex 2 card (Diamond MX300), and quad output does not work on XP, even with the instructions/drivers on www.vortexofsound.com. If you want a good deal, get the Soundblaster Live! 5.1 OEM from Creative on Newegg for $32.

No, it does not work fine. I would not recommend anyone going out and buying a Vortex based card to run under XP. The newest MS released Vortex2 drivers break them completely. Even with the old ones, while the SPDIF output works, AC3/DTS passthrough doesn't.

Don't bother.
