Everybody rags on generic tools, but I haven't seen much solid evidence to back it up.

FWIW, I've always used generic sockets for minor-medium jobs, including automobile work. I've broken one 12mm and one 14mm socket in maybe 6 years of wrenching. Yes, the quality isn't as good as Craftsman, but IMHO, I don't think it's worth paying 2-3+ times more for a set that's barely better, especially since I think I've seen just as many Craftman sockets break as generic ones. Or try this...

On rob4128's post - I also have a set of generic impact sockets from Harbor freight. I also use them with normal ratchets at times, and no complaints there.

For the heavy stuff, I use name brand (prefer Husky). I've even used a normal Husky 23mm socket with an impact gun to loosen a lower suspension bolt that's torqued to 156 lb-ft. Don't skimp on torque wrenches though...

Just my 2 cents

Um... ok. quality tools ARE worth it. Husky quality is about comparable to craftsman imo.

Having a tool break is beyond irritating.. assuming you don't break your knuckle open or destroy whatever your tool hits, or the tool doesn't strip the bolt head, etc etc

for $5, decent to have a set in each trunk. of course they're not good quality tools - whaddya expect for $5!!!!!1

in a jam, having a shoddy $5 socket set beats the snot out of not having a shoddy $5 socket set.

FWIW:
Great Neck Lifetime Warranty (requires *original* sales receipt, postage prepaid ):

Our Full Lifetime Warranty is a testament to our commitment to quality and is printed on just about every product we make at Great Neck.

Lifetime Warranty

For as long as you own this Great Neck product, if it ever fails to give you complete satisfaction, return the product along with your original sales receipt for a free replacement, postage prepaid to:

Great Neck Saw Mfrs. Inc.
Mineola, N.Y. 11501.

This warranty gives you specific rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.

You can contact Great Neck Saw directly, using the form below, if your local retailer was not able to satisfy your warranty.

So, if one socket breaks, and you send in the *original* sales receipt, what happens when a second socket breaks? Ain't got no original sales receipt, anymore, right?

Alternatively, mailing in the entire set for a complete replacement, if one piece breaks, is going to cost an arm and a leg, for something heavy like a socket set.

A clever no-win scenario.
Even if you do actually keep the original sales receipt???

Well, I got my two sets last night. The quality is pretty poor, but for the price I paid I consider them disposable. I dropped one in my car incase there's a side of the road fix that ever needs to be done. If I forget them and drive more then 2 miles, I doubt I'd turn around. All in all though, I'd probably buy them again for that price.

Are these 6 point or 8?

I once had some 6 point sockets that were cheap round the corners on a bolt just because the material gave every time I tried to turn it. I'd rather get craftsman, but as everyone else said...these are worth it just because they're so cheap. Just beware of overtightened bolts....

You can split a Craftsman socket just as easy as the ones in this set. The only difference is that Sears will replace theirs.

I couldn't resist this one. I picked one up at the Blackstone and Barstow store in Fresno and they had a couple more there.

Thanks OP!

I think you may be thinking of 6 point vs. 12.

The set is entirely 6 point except for the three 8 point sockets (for square nuts)
