Please visit http://www.av-comparatives.org/ and view the latest report about how your AV is stacking up in their latest test. REPORT 14

Proactive Test - the results for this one is interesting.

"Andreas Clementi, who runs the web site av-comparatives.org, has released his latest report that looks at how well antivirus programs do against threats that have not yet been identified and included in standard AV signatures. The test looked at 17 different products, including offerings from Symantec, McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky, and Microsoft, and tested how well releases dated February 2 (with no updates) fared against a swath of new malware?viruses, scripts, trojans, and other nasties?that were discovered between February 2 and May 2."
- Jeremy Reimer @ Ars Technica

Personally, I jumped shipped from free Antivir to free AOL Kaspersky when i first read about it on another site and posted about the offer.

Part of the results of the link test follows:

ProActive detection of new Backdoors, Trojans and other malware:
1. Avira - 84%
2. Nod32 - 70%
.
7. Avast -31%
8. Symantec - 29%
9. McAfee - 28%
10. Microfsoft - 21%
11. Kaspersky - 11%
12. AVG - 10%

ProActive dectection of new Worms, Windows, OtherOS and Script viruses/malware
1. Fortinet - 84%
2. Nod32 - 64%
3. Avira - 27%
.
12. Kaspersky - 2%

Please do not take this as the end all of Antivirus tests. Please read up on Report 13 to see how the various AVs work on their 'ON DEMAND COMPARATIVE"

As someone who hunts for fresh malware daily, and whose ISP has a Fortinet Fortigate security gateway, it's amusing how much malware I've sucked through its supposedly-great proactive defenses, only to hear the signature Kaspersky "pig-squeal" on my end, confirming that it's malware No disrespect meant to the guys at Fortinet, of course. Just don't get too carried away with that report there.

Anyway, judging by VirusTotal results, the vigorous signature updates of Kaspersky usually trump the heuristics of AntiVir on the stuff I've been finding, including scripts and Trojans. Still, either AntiVir or Kaspersky would be pretty good when combined with Common Sense 2007® and a non-Administrator user account. For advanced protection in Web scenarios, disable Java and Javascript in your browser (NoScript for FireFox, ??? for Opera, or for IE, use the Trusted Zone to allow scripting in trusted sites in IE while disabling Active Scripting and Java in the Internet Zone, mech's video how-to). And check your other stuff with Secunia's thingamabob, people, eliminate your known vulns NOW.

I use ZoneAlarm Internet Secuirty Suite that uses the Kaspersky anti-virus/malware engine. I've never had a virus yet in over 5 years. it has detected and taken care of all thus far.

FWIW there are people that don't use an AV or AS at all and never get infected. You can't base an their performance around the detection rates on your personal computers.

You can't know if you're infected or not unless you have means to detect an infection, unless you're certified in virii crypto 1337.
