I've only looked at 2 sites so far, avcomparatives.com and pcworld.com.

AV Comparatives gives Avira premium a very high score. PC World gives it a low score.

My Kaspersky sub runs out soon and I was thinking of getting something else, but who do you trust? How can there be such huge differences in the reviews?

I believe I would trust av-comparatives much more than a magazine.

I've been using Avira Premium for a while now and I like it. It seems to always have very high detections rates which is the most important to me. I haven't upgraded to version 9 yet because I've been beta testing my other 2 security apps to resolve a conflict or 2.

Both Avira and Kaspersky are excellent AV's. Give Avira a try if you feel like change.

I totally agree with balloon, I have been using Avira Premium and Glary utilities to maintain my laptop, and she runs well.

I use Kaspersky. I'm a very satisfied customer. Their AV is great. I've used it for four years already once Norton AV became a disaster. I haven't switched to anything else because it'd be pointless. Hourly definition updates and it has one of the best, if not the best detection rates.

you do realize that $40 is Kaspersky Antivirus 2009 (download version) so you save since you don't get media disc). Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 new is $79. (in-store) Renewing is $45.

Two different programs. KAV 2009 doesnt have a firewall whereas KIS 2009 does include a software firewall.

Norton 2009 is supposed to be light years better than previous iterations.

Well you have to read carefully when looking at tests. If you see the latest report from AV-Comparatives Avira does not get highest rating and yet detection is still very good, as always. A few FPs and they take away stars and medals. I dissagree with that, as long as FPs are not that many!, but you have to dig in and understand how review is made, what they evaluate and how they weigh features. AV-Comparatives at least make an effort in presenting their views. Seems to me they are becoming soft though - praise all products in test, users(buyers) can be safe with all products but here are our results..." Dont know about that. Too friendly, if so focused on test they will not approve of low ratings! but nm, still good site. A magazine is more likely to skip over the technical stuff, just say "we tested same samples as we did with X product" or whatever. More of a review of the user experience, from installing to removal of infection - if done properly... Also counts, may be more even.

Actually the test I refer to is not for Premium package so not relevant but same goes for that when hunting down reviews and oppinions. Also a good idea to take a look at official support forum. Can give hints to state of current situation. And you should install a trial version. Some GUIs or ways of funtioning you might hate no matter what name is on the box. Even more important with big suites, you should feel at home and use features not go yikes.

Also consider free setup

I've become a fan of Kaspersky Internet Security.

Formerly used McAfee for years, then switched to KIS, which is definitely effective.

Used free Avira on a laptop for awhile, then switched to paid KIS, and feel very confident in its protection. Yes it costs a bit...=cheap insurance!!!

So I downloaded the latest version of Avira last night and ran a scan. So what gives here, I've got my scan results and can't see any way to selectively quarantine the files. There are two options, either quarantine them all or quarantine none. What's the point of that? This assumes that Avira makes no mistakes and whatever is on the list must be harmful to my system. I'm uninstalling this program. Guess I'll try something else.

Go into configuration and tick Expert mode. Then scanner, scan, action for concerning files - chose interactive and set notification mode to combined (expert). If you keep Avira may be also chose "optimzed scan" and "All files" in Scan menu. Probably not a good idea to change same setting under Guard.
