We all know that you have an irrational hatred for MSE, and yes we also know that it's not the most effective anti-virus tool (it actually works VERY well against common threats which are what the vast majority of "regular" users are going to encounter, it just doesn't do well against zero-day exploits so it gets a lower score in your tests), but your single minded crusade against the program is just silly. The way you are acting, someone might think MSE called you a doody-head or stole your lunch money.
Aside from the fact that it doesn't automatically update the definitions you have to click on the Windows update notification daily to update them. It's a joke.
Berryracer, I am sure there is some guy somewhere who wants to listed to how much you hate MSE, and how you love to make up stuff. Unfortunately, he is not located in these forums.

I've lost track of all the malware ridden MSE equipped boxes I have seen.
I use Kaspersky IS 2013 and it's a damned solid product. I also bought a 3-license Norton for $20....damned near free, and it's leagues better than MSE. Well, rubbing peanut butter on your modem is better than MSE, but yall get my point.

You can disable it, but installing an AV client that replaces it will do so, so it's pretty pointless, if you already hate MSE.ahh that explains it because I used whatever comes with 8. Can one install MSE on 8 and disable Defender permenantly? I thought MSE is now called Defender on 8 and not a separate product as it used to be

Their RAM usage is in the region of 100MB or more, depending on your system memory & also the number of programs you're running(background activity as well) at a time, also Kaspersky is bloated as hell & slows down your system especially if you're having a traditional HDD as system drive & a dual core processor !
