Um......oops.

Apparently the battery went dead in my sarcasm meter. It usually works pretty well.

My apologies.

That's because you weren't using Monster batteries

A little OT but how can you justify spending so much on speakers now that most the source material is compressed?

This is my exact reasoning as to why I won't spend a fortune on speaker.

Well you have to hear these, the sound reproduction speaks for itself. In addition to that not everybody is listening to digital sources.

Lastly these don't cost a fortune, they are actually a bargain and at these prices they are a steal.

I "think" they were $899 without risers.

That sounds right to me.

I've still yet to hear a speaker by AV123...I'd kinda like to, to see what all the fuss is about. Right now my next upgrade is hovering between Dynaudio C1's and Revel Studio Gems.

If anybody's buying a package, could you PM me? I could use one of those 3-shelf racks for my second system.

I'll admit that some stuff is just bad. Garbage in = garbage out.

In cases where you do have a pretty good source though...

Despite sources not being perfect, I think it's still decent enough in the vast majority of cases that you'll benefit from nice speakers. I think rockets are somewhere in the "midrange" price level in the overal scheme of things.

For a 5.0 system maybe

<$500 = entry level
$500-$1000 low end
$1000-$2000 low midrange
$2000-$4000 midrange
$4000-$10000 upper midrange
$10000-$25000 getting into high-end
>$25000 crazy people

Go out and listen to some different stuff to see what you're missing if you're really concerned that your source is going to be holding you back. If you're listening to 128kbps MP3s or something... yeah... that's going to not be a good match. Even in those cases though, a good sound system will not add its own limitations to the already less than stellar source material. Of course you'll also be able to tell when you have really bad source material, but I think the gains when you have good source are worth it

They are going to start free demo-ing of bookshelf speakers. If you give them a call, maybe you could try out a pair of Ref1s risk free to try them out?

Right now, I'm looking to upgrade the main system, so I doubt any of their current monitor offerings are in the same league as what I'm looking at. I'd like to hear one of their big towers to see what all the fuss is about.

As for DIY speakers...all in good time. I'm starting with some DIY components, like a DAC, amp, pre-amp

The Strata Mini might be the one to try.

Man I'd be all over these if I didn't already buy some Sapphire . . . 25th Anniversary Edition from ACI...

Keep the deals coming...

This is very very HOT.
I was close to pulling the trigger on a reference system about 2 years ago. The reference are incredible speakers for the money. They are very very detailed. I found them almost a bit harsh for my tastes though, esp in my space with not many wall coverings, lots of bare walls, floors etc. If you have a "warmer" environment the reference would be absolutely perfect. You'll hear details in your music you never noticed before.
The Rocket series are awesome too. There's no way you can build a better sounding system for the money. Build quality is amazing on these guys, very heavy very well built.

I wound up going with B&Ws, but at this price i might be building a seperate system out of the references..

I think it's nice to see some family members here too

I've run into a few people on the AV123 forum that are members here too.

Wow, I really wish this would have happened about 6 months from now.

I really want some new speakers, but even with the sale, I can't quite swing it on these right now.

Anyone thinking about getting a decent setup should seriously consider the 760/200/300 setup for $2100. I realize that's a big chunk o' change, but that setup will sound so much better than the $ spent. I have a step down system from that: 550/200/150 that I got a few years ago and have no regrets at all. Even my non-audiophile wife has become a big proponent of quality HT setups.

envy bump!

Any idea how good they are compared to SVSound's?
The SVS-SB01 set is probably comparable to that X-series of AV123, with beefier sub?

Yeah, the current SVS offerings would be competing at the X-series pricepoint.

The PB10 is quite the sub and would have no problems outperforming the X-sub afaik

I've become an SVS addict as well. There's a used PC Ultra somewhere between California an Wisconsin on its way to me right now

The future MTS speakers from SVS might eventually be a competator to the rocket options.

Of course, they're all going to have their own unique sound, so who knows what you'll like?

I have a similar system and am waiting for RSC500 to come out to possibly pair with some 850s.

The av123 x-ls bookshelfs are bigger sounding and slighty better in my opinion than the svsound, while the svsound subwoofer pb10 is better than the av123 x-sub. At the same time, the svsound speakers can be wall mounted since they are smaller and do not have a rear port if that is an issue. I actually have the x-cs/x-ls bookshelves and 2 svsound cs-ultra subwoofers hooked up to a 1000 watt amp. You haven't heard bass until you've heard $2300 of subwoofers causing near structural damage to your house YOyoYOhowsDAjello, you'll be craving another one after you hear just one......

Too bad the x-ls speakers aren't on sale. Those are pretty much the cheapest speakers to get from av123 (~$260 shipped right now). Even at their current price, they outperform anything near their pricerange. I'm not sure how many "budget speaker of the year" awards they won recently, but they did win atleast a few from audio magazines. If the current sale price speakers are above your range, consider the x-ls bookshelves anyway.

I'm using a 20-39 PC+ right now which honestly is plenty for the current space, but for $650+ shipping, I couldn't pass up the PC Ultra I found

Checking Audiogon, Videogon, and several other FS/FT forums finally paid off... by making me spend money

I just need to find another PC Ultra so I can sell the 20-39 and have my nice matched set.

I figure that will hold me over and help me resist the urge to go BMF-1.

I'm doing my part to help empty their stockrooms before the big move!

I already have a Rocket 5.1 setup in my family room, and will soon have a stereo setup in the living room...
