Working on a neighbor's Dell Dimension 3000. Already removed 12 viruses by slaving the drive but splash screens for AV360 keep loading with Windows (?) I'm pretty confident this is a BS app.....but can't seem to suppress or remove it.

Any suggestions?

P.S. trying to avoid bulldozing the OS.

Yea, you don't want that. That's one of the Antivirus (360, XP, 2009...) variants. From what I've read, it's kind of a bitch to get rid of. Someone else will probably give you firm advice, but give malwarebytes a try. I think that's one of the tools that can get rid of it.

It will direct you to a site where you can purchase a "AntiVirus" program for $40 or something. Turns out to be some Russian company or something I think.

I've had good luck using HiJackThis to delete all the startup entries and junk, then delete the actual files, then run SpyBot in Safe Mode to clean up. May or may not get everything though. I cleaned a computer with a variant of this virus recently and that method worked.

My further research confirms that Malwarebytes might be the answer. Can anyone point me to a legit link for an install? Is it free?

I'm afraid to just Google it in case I then get directed to a bogus site.

Will post results after I finish......seems this virus/malware is somewhat common too.

Well thank you EVERYONE.

Seems like malewarebytes did the trick with the AV360. Once that was out of the way I was able to install several other utilities to clean-up and tidy-up (i.e. Advanced System Care). Oddly though, the on-board ethernet controller would not allow a wired connection to the router. I even downloaded via my computer to a portable HD, the latest drivers for the Intel Pro/100Ve controller and installed....but NG. I then saw that there was a PCI card in there already and went out and got the latest drivers for the card (Linksys). Installed and bingo!

No more AV360 popup and now running MANY microsoft updates.....I guess it was off the internet for a while.

whew.....couple of hours invested.
