avast! 8 is now ready! The build number is 8.0.1482.

Final version installed fine on my Win8 x64 PC, no issues , very low memory usage and decent scanning speed so all positive in my books.

I don't like new Avast. It interferes too much, loud "Avast virus database has been updated" voice everytime I turn on the PC) and whenever I try to execute a Visual Studio code it tries to open it in sandbox.

You can turn off the sounds in the options. You should also be able to permanently allow any program so it doesn't try to use the sandbox.

You can turn off the voice and other sounds in Avast.

Settings (upper left corner) > Sounds

To set custom exclusions or turn off the Auto Sandbox completely:

1. Click the Security tab at the top (second from left).

2. Click the File System Shield (top left button)

3. Click the Settings button on the right.

4. Click Auto Sandbox in the left column.

I'm not knocked out by the new look. It looks like they're trying to fit in with Win 8, which I also find more distracting than interesting, and it took some searching to find the settings I usually use. I can't stand WebRep, and I always turn it off. AFIC, it's a waste of time giving me a compilation of opinions about sites from other people who may or may not know squat about the site or online security.

I also turned off their "feature" that updates other software. I don't want auto-updates because I always check out new releases of browsers, Adobe Acrobat, Flash, Shockwave, etc. I've seen too many catastrophies resulting from installation of early versions of releases. Remember the recent failures in Java < shudder >, and I've seen plenty of faulty releases of Flash, Mozilla and early versions of IE releases.

Thanks. I also always disable auto updates, have never seen any benefit of auto updates, but hey let them keep it the way it is, so the clueless users can be test subjects for the early versions.

You can adjust the loudness for the Avast audible alerts (or many other applications).
When you hear an audible alert, Open Volume Mixer.

I get about 1 minute after the alert is heard to see the volume control for the application.
If the Volume Mixer is open before the audible alert, the control is added to the mixer.
The Application volume control(s) usually remain available until the Volume Mixer or Application is closed.

The Volume Mixer can't be minimized, but other windows can be open on top of it.

I would post a screen print but it looks like I can't insert an image, probably because I don't have enough posts here.

I like the Avast audible alerts, but I agree the default is too loud.

So theres where it went... The only time sandbox annoyed me was when I tried to save locknote and it failed silently after I dismissed the sandbox popup.
