Let me say the movie looked AMAZING and the special effects were mind blowing. But, about half? way into the movie, I started to want to throw up:
The main characters of the movie do a complete 180 and started MURDERING their fellow soldiers and American comrades.
I understand if you do not believe in what your government is doing - and if you believe this strongly enough you can get a dishonorable discharge from the military - but to literally a) steal American weapons and then b) use them to kill those Americans you fought side by side with and are contracted under law with to serve fully and honorably just made me sick.

When that girl helicopter pilot turned her American helicopter around and started firing at her superiors, my stomach started turning. I felt no sympathy at all when she got blown up.
Treason is arguably the WORST crime a person can commit. In fact, it is the only crime documented in the US constitution. If she wants to turn her helicopter back, refuse to fight, and get sent to prison for disobeying the law, then she can - that is her only right.

Another thing that bothered me was the fact that the natives would have gotten stomped on if 1) they did not use any of the "Sky Peoples"'s weapons or 2) they hadn't gotten extremely fortunate (those explosives were seconds from being dropped before a stolen grenade stopped it - and then the second grenade that blew the hole).

I'm not a fan of any movie that shows the American military being defeated.

Notes:
I know there are threads on the movie, but I want this thread to be specifically about this part of the movie and also about Americans being defeated in movies in general.
I am contracted in the Army ROTC.

1) It's just a movie
2) Would it have been wrong for one of Hitler's soldiers to betray and kill him? Sure would have saved a lot of lives, time, and money

(yes, I invoked Godwin's law one post into a thread, sorry)

Meh. The entire movie was written to make the bad guys into overblown villain caricatures. Why? Because that is fun and entertaining. I'd say murdering hundreds/thousands of innocent civilians is a worse crime than treason, and I'd commit treason to stop a massacre. I love my country but not that much.

I didn't either, but that was because no characters were developed properly.

As far as her committing treason, Michelle Rodriguez was trying to save thousands of innocents from being slaughtered, in cold blood, by your Americans. Like AstroManLuca, I'd commit treason as well to stop a massacre of innocents.

Treason is arguably the WORST crime a person can commit.

It's in no way worse than murder or rape.

I'm not a fan of any movie that shows the American military being defeated.

Did they even establish that they were American? The humans were from Earth, but I don't recall any American flags anywhere. Maybe in this future universe they were Americanadianexicans.

I am contracted in the Army ROTC.

NO WAY

1. OK
2. The "Sky People" never once made the first move without due warning. They wanted the tree and so they took it. Eminent domain. I am sure the resources provided under that tree could be used to help save many American lives - why else would it be so valuable. The natives were being greedy. They did not have to die and they did not have to retaliate. If they wanted to retaliate, that is fine, but do not expect sympathy.
If all had gone according to plan, NO ONE would have died and who knows what benefits would have come. Not to mention, they are not even humans. If a dog is sitting on top of an epipen and I get stung by a bee, you better believe I will put my human life over that dog's to get it. And be justified. I am saying this as an ASPCA volunteer, too.
3. Treason can be considered worse than murder and rape when you look at it like this: a government is set up by people to protect those people. That protection includes protection from things like murder and rape and then also punishment of violators. Treason, specifically, is the betrayal of that government and the entire system. Destroying the government also destroys laws and essentially ALLOWS murder and rape.
4. The ranks matched up specifically with those of America - not to mention American names, dialects, armor, features, etc.
5. I put that in there to say that I might be biased. You are a douchebag for turning that around any other way.

Please tell me you are joking? I guess you missed the part at the beginning where they said that all the soldiers were mercenaries working for a corporation. There is no analogy to make to the US government. All the soldiers were working and murdering the native people for a private corporation trying to plunder the natural resources of the planet Pandora.

That's the main difference between this movie and District 9 - oppression by a coalition of governments versus oppression by a mining company.

The American Revolution was considered treason. Imagine if our forefathers thought the way you do now..

It's more important to operate in a world of right and wrong than it is to operate in a world of Americans / non-Americans.

It was an anti-capitalist, anti-military movie? A liberal's wet dream in fact.

What did you expect?

My friend wanted to go see it yesterday; I declined since at this point I've negatively hyped the movie for myself for reasons like this*. I don't think I could watch it and enjoy the movie at this point in time. Maybe in a few months I'll be able to view it objectively (and get a cheaper ticket, with the right sales I could eat decently for a week with $16).

*And I consider myself relatively liberal.

Let me be the first in the military to tell you to get your panties out of a wad. Seriously, it's a MOVIE. Sure, I thought about the same thing you did when I saw Jake Sully killing his own kind, but geez, it's a movie depicting a fictional metal with applications we don't know of with a bunch of humans bullying around some innocent natives. Get over it.

This ^^^^^^

These were mercenaries that were former military, more former marines than anything else it looked like.

Actually, no, these were not mercenaries. These were Marines on a tour to Pandora. Sully spent the rest of his contract finishing what his brother couldn't.

I don't know. I couldn't figure out what the exact situation was. It seemed like they were in the military as they were using the rank structure and all, but they were taking orders from that annoying guy (the one who was playing golf in the beginning).

Either way, though, it's important to remember that it's a movie, and a pretty goddamn heavy-handed one at that. Seems like it's basically Cowboys and Indians in Space. But I found it extremely entertaining because I didn't spend all my time thinking about plot details. For a while I was thinking "they have a whole planet to work with, why not look for another one of those mineral deposits somewhere else?" but the beautiful scenery distracted me.
